By any chance what deserts?, I'm from the high desert of Palm Springs area, I moved from there about 6 years ago. again I'm in the high desert of East County San Diego.

Those pictures look like Coachella Valley or Victorville Joshua Tree?? I'm I getting closer???

Has anyone seen a 1-1/2 day old baby sleep standing up. It was pretty funny to watch. His head would slowly drift down, down, down until he would hear a noise and it would jerk up and start over again. Pour little fella. I don't know why he wouldnt lay down. And I am still looking for a barn name. Anyone have ideas. He is a little sweetheart. Will try and get new pics this weekend

With the arrival of the filly last Saturday I realized I hadn't taken any really recent ones of Malik. So here are a few of the two babies together. The filly is two days old in the pictures and Malik is one month old. I'm amazed at her size - as big as the colt - no wonder her dam was a waddling duck for the last month plus!!!

Susan, doesn't it stink waiting while everyone else is foaling!? I have felt that way for soooo long....but now that my last baby is safely on the ground, I have no idea what to do with my time! I actually MISS anticipating baby! (wow, I guess I've got a little leftover DUHH)...but my house is FINALLY clean, and the laundry's done....and the kids say "are you home from the barn? We've missed you mommy..." and that's pretty sweet. haha!

I've got another 8 1/2 months to go waiting for mine! I'm already anticipating! I didnt rebreed last year because I didnt want to breed on foal heat, and it was getting late in the season, so, here I am, admiring all of your little ones!

They are all so cute, i cant get excited about mine because i have alot of fears and worrys, i dont have any experience and i worry for my mare and the survival of the foal, but seeing all these gorgeous healthy babies fills me with hope! Whatever it is it will be tb or tb cross something - the main breeds tb's get crossed with here are cob (vanner) irish draught and warmblood. i cant cope with any more surprises!

during the last week I have been working at body clipping my babies and having such a good time. Zane, Rockette and Jinz actually let me clip while they are standing next to me...they are very relaxed...jinx is so relaxed I clipped half his body while he was laying down....today I started on faces...I wrapped my arm around jinx's head and held him next to my chest...he cuddled up and I clipped around his eyes, ears and nose...WHAT A VERY GOOD BOY...it sure is great when they are that nice to handle...they leave their mothers and run over to visit with me when they see my car....it is going to be hard to let them go...only one colt is standing off...I put him and his mother in a grass paddock today so he will get more human contact. His mom is not very motherly and poor guy is youngest in the field...seems to feel left out all over the place....

Sorry Wanda, I didn't realize I had not looked at your pics until I saw Marilyn's comments, so I went back and looked. I love her legs also. I am not very knowledgeable about horse comformation, but I think I know a good horse when I see one. She looks very well built to me. Totally agree with Marilyn. And only 5 days old!!!

Oh, and to the others who asked about my mare, she is doing great. She is pretty mellow aobut letting me work with her baby once I get him, but will knicker to him to come to her opposite side when she thinks I want to catch him.

He will calm down once she gets over that, I think, cause he stands and looks at me a lot, gets pretty close. Does not act scared at all-just responds to Mama's calls of "get over here boy." LOL

Wanda, I was wondering if she had draft horse in her. Wow. I'll have to read your plans for her under that thread.

I think we all should post on the update thread so we can see how these foals look after a few weeks of age.

Okay, I have to ask Bobbi, what is the gimooseraff look? Are you kidding? His little face is adorable, isn't it? Especially with the cowlick in the middle. How many horses have you seen with that? I don't think I have, ever.

Is your gimooseraff pretty much unafraid of everything? I don't see this guy spooking at hardley anything, although his mama doesn't much either. However, she is a little bit high strung.

Could I be lucky enough to have a horse that will be bombproof at a young age? I'm really going to have to read up on these dummy foals more.

CJ...plans??? I didn't even know I was having her until 3 wks ago...I am still in shock that I have a foal...right now I am taking it day by day...I have a lot to learn..but I think she will probably stay here and hopefully just be an all around great riding horse..I think my 7yr old is showing enough interest that I hope she will want to start showing...I have 3 boys still at home and they love the horses but maybe one of them have said they want to join 4-h next year and show but we have alot to learn before then and I have a gelding that I am hoping will be ready for that by then...

Everyone foals are just beautiful!!!!

Laurie, from the picture, it looks like you live in Ramona, Poway, or El Cajon. I was born and raised in Chula Vista, then after high school, we moved to Escondido. That's where I met my husband. We lived in Escondido for 3 years, and then moved to Valley Center. Lived there for 2 years, and then moved up here to Port Angeles, WA. One of my good friends from high school still lives in Ramona and my parents live in San Marcos. Small world!!!

Hi Laurie. The only thing I miss is the nice weather, but I don't miss the crime, traffic, smog, high prices, and the crowds. The weather up here usually isn't too bad, but this year it sucks! Our average rainfall in only 16 inches, but right now I'm missing the sunshine and warm weather. It is supposed to get into the lower 80's by Thursday or Friday. It's been cloudy and rainy for the past several days.

Charlene, reading your post made me homesick! Not from Port Angeles, but lived in both the Seattle and Tacoma area. Left because of the rain and cloud cover. I'd still go back in a heartbeat if our kids weren't all settled here with their own families.

CJ, what part of California are you living in now? I been up here for 12 years now, and I am just starting to get sick of the weather. My daughter is going to be a senior next year, so we won't be going anywhere for awhile. Mabey when my daughter is done with college we can think about moving somewhere else. I was thinking about mabey Colorado or Oregon.

Cj: A GiMooseraffe look is...well...you just have to look at your baby's face...then look at mine's face:

Moose at Three Weeks
http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj67/BGOVRO_2008/Slew%20City%20Warrior/?
action=view&current=HaleysCamera2001.jpg

Its just kind of one of those duh-de-duh looks that they have. Just full of sweetness that you want to hug the living delights out of them.

Much different than the "normal" I'm a Little Turd foal look that JJ has...like this:

http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj67/BGOVRO_2008/RhettiSetGo/?action=view&cur rent=Rhettiface1.jpg

The cowlick thing...funny you have that. Moose's mom, Blossom, has one. Its even named on her Jockey Club papers as "Cowlick on Face"...that's why she's adorable as well (she's everybody's favorite mare).

Jan: Yes...I did get spots. I was told that Tobiano & Overo crosses are always guaranteed color...they just don't tell you that it is MINIMAL! Hahahaha! Bless his little heart, once he gets a saddle on, you won't be able to see them anymore...hahaha...they are right where the front cinch and the back girth are!

They look sweet...but little JJ is an onery one. I just adore him and his arrogant personality but he has chased off several family members who claim that "he ONLY loves you mom!" Funny creatures these little ones are.

Charlene, I'm in the Fresno area (Central Valley). Gets over a hundred much of the summer.

You might look at northern CA. or the coast. Depends are what you can afford.

What about Squim WA. ? Lots of sunshine and not so much rain, I heard. Just an idea. I wish your daughter good luck with her studies. My two daughters graduated recently.

Tawnya, what a great filly. That is an interesting mark on her forehead. Perhaps a name related to that?

Crystal-Congratulations on an easy, healthy delivery. What a nice looking foal!

What is mama and daddy's names?

I'm not good with names, I'm sorry to say.

Bobbi, yup, I see what you mean. There's a sweet look as opposed to "hey, look at me!" Can't wait to see Poco grow up, but want him to stay little a while longer. I didn't realize you got to see Moose born. Sweet!

Hi CJ. Thanks for the suggestion about Sequim, but that is where I'm from. Port Angeles is just about 7 miles west of Sequim, and I work in Sequim. The weather had just been cruddy this year.

Laurie, I was going to guess Campo or Boulevard from the pictures. I grew up in Descanso, but am now in Texas. My parents still live in Descanso; sister in Crest; Brother in Lakeside; Sister in Carlsbad; daughter in La Mesa; mother-in-law in Santee. We lived in Jamul for 20 years before moving here. Its nice to look outside and see beautiful green pastures and giant oak trees. The only drawback here is the summer heat. The rest of the year is very similar to Campo or Descanso.

Diana: there is nothing on the planet cuter than a mini foal. Just wanna hug him hard!

Congratulations to everyone on their beautiful babies!

I'm done, 2 foals born last week, 1 born this morning and 1 back in April. 3 fillies and 1 colt, so far everyone is doing great. I'm so glad foaling season is over, now I can concentrate on breed. Good foaling vibes to all that are still waiting.

Thank you CJ and Jonathan
I have been very lucky this foaling season, I was there for all the foalings, they were all easy except the last one which tooks some major pulling and so far no big vet bills. I didn't even loose any sleep unnecessary, I almost feal guilt when I read about others staying up for weeks. I'm so glad it is over. Now to raise them in one peice is the next challenge, I'm sure I'll loose some sleep over that.

Thanks CJ.

Tawnya, I just thought of another possible barn name. How about Peanut? Since she is the color of one. If I have another dun baby someday, I think the name Peanut would be perfect for a filly or a colt. I don't know why I didn't think of it before when I was trying to think of a barn name for Jetta. Oh well, I like Jetta too. Let me know if I can help you with a registered name for her.

Terry, nice babies. They look so big! What breed are they? Of course, mine is just 2 wks. old, so he seems really small-or maybe it is just the close ups?

I bet they have a blast playing together! Wish I could see it. Bet you enjoy it a lot. How nice you have enough babies near the same ages to paly together! Sweet!

Joyce, thanks for the compliment! And no, sadly, they are both for sale....I only have room for the mares and stallions I have, but love having the babies, and sell them every year. I've always told myself that if I had something spectacular I'd keep it...if Voodoo was a filly, he'd be staying for sure! And if Jewel doesn't sell, I wouldn't object to building her a stall and putting her with a trainer for show!

Well sorry ive not been on in a while, ive been so busy with work, and then missing so many nights sleep staying awake waiting for the foal to arrive. Well he did, on Saturday night at approx 9.45pm, birth went well, mare got a touch colicy afterwards so the vet came out and gave her some painkiller and also a mild sedative to calm her down as she was getting a bit stressed out by it all. As of yet, he is unamed! But anyway here he is

http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z127/luvly-litte-lady/New%20Foal%202008/

I cant believe how well all the others are looking, they are all so grown up already!!
Good luck to those all still waiting, for now this is my last foal from this mare. I felt such a fool but i started to cry as soon as I knew she was in labour because I was so scared of something going wrong - managed to pull myself together to help deliver him, but decided thats enough for now!!! Those of you who deliver lots, i honestly dont know how you cope, you all deserve a medal!!

Oh these babies are driving me crazy!! They are beautiful!!!!!! Great Job everybody!!! Wow!!! It's making me want to breed my big paint mare.

I find myself looking at my mini mares belly alot! She was bred in October, but supposedly isn't pregnant. But she looks it! I keep hoping for a miracle I guess. :-)

Diana, too adorable!! You named one Jewel? My mare's name is Jewel too. Thanks for sharing your "cuties." I can sure see why you would keep them if you could, or if Voodoo were a filly. That's where I am at with my guy. If filly and looked as good as he does, no question-I'd keep him. So I know what you mean. But at least you get to have new babies every year. It's great your kids are involved too (well, I assuming they are your kids)!

Charlene, you must be very proud of Jetta. Cute name too. She looks like she will make a fine adult horse with her sturdy legs!

Hannah, congrats!!!!! I'm glad you could be there. He's really nice. And you are not a fool for crying. These mares go through a lot and you are just showing compassion.
As for handling the stress, charelene has the answer to that one! LOL

Jan....the foal halters came from my local tack shop...don't know the brand...they work great as they have two sizes of poll straps so they can be made larger. If you are interested i will research manufacturer for youl. Terry

I'm having a lot of trouble finding 'baby' halters. All the stores around here only carry the 100# and up.

Someone sent me a link (and I appreciate it) but when I checked it I could not find the halters. So I e-mailed and haven't heard back yet. So I'm still looking. But in the meantime, I've got the 100# halter and use a wide strip of velcro to adjust the poll. I also tie the buckle into a knot. It is always easy to untie. Works pretty good, except I just have to watch that the metal buckle that connects the halter pieces, doesn't get pulled up into his eye when he pulls on it, but that hasn't happened yet.

my newest filly (one week now) is also quite small and the foal halters I have are too big. She needs one too!!!!!! Yesterday I was alone and wanted to load mom and babe for a trip to the vet....I am now calling this filly Runaround Sue....she took off and circled the whole property...Mom was wild with anxiety, I could hardly hold her and obviously the trip to the vet was off....Today with the help of my friend we loaded Viuda and filly...once at the vet, once again the filly was Ms. Independent...even if she is small and young she is going to get halter training before her mother has apoplexy....I mean both her mothers (me and Viuda).....this little girl has no fear and while neighing wildly for mom is moving in the opposite direction....

Judy, thanks for the idea! I know they make smaller halters, but can't find one to save my life! So I may try your idea. I'm going to ask the feed store if they can order one first, though.

Terry, "Run Around Sue." What a pistol, huh? And at one week? Holy cow. Poor mare. Perhaps she will be one you'll wean early? HeHeHe!

My two weeker is pestering mama to death. He rears up and he chews her mane. I had planned to leave him with her and let her wean him when she is ready, but I'm having other thoughts already!

Enjoying the out of doors. This was her first turn out into pasture. It had been raining so much they couldn't be out on it.

Diana, thanks again. The first time I looked at it, I couldn't find the small sizes. Perhaps I was just too impatient. LOL!

Cj, keep in mind that they are ALL small sizes, as they are for minis....so it's alot easier just to call and ask for Gary ...he can help you determine exactly the right one you need for a big horse foal....I'd imagine a medium would do great. My 2 small mares wear medium, and have about the same size head as a large horse foal.

CJ,THANK YOU,YES THAT IS WHAT I THOUGHT ,BUT NOW HE IS GETTING SOME BLK HAIR IN HIS MANE AND VERY DARK COLORING IS STARTING TO TAKE OVER HIS LIGHT PALOMINO COLORING,SO MAYBE BUCKSKIN PAINT,I WAS TOLD I WOULD GET EITHER BUCKSKIN OR PALOMINO,SO I GUESS TIME WILL TELL,I LOVE BOTH COLORS SO EITHER IS FINE WITH ME.

EMILY,THANK YOU!

Diana,
I'm sure you will be going to a family that will love your little guy! ALthough I must say that was fast! Selling horses in this market has gotten to be awful!
Maybe Mini's are different??

Take care,
L

Hello all, and thanks for the kind words! I am VERY proud of that breeding, and put an outstanding price on him. He was on the market 3 days, and was snatched up without so much as a mention of negotiating price. The elusive blue eyed leopard appy in miniature seems to be a very sought after thing! The little pintaloosa filly I can't seem to even get bites on, so I guess the horse market in general is pretty down...as I usually can sell my babies within a couple of days of marketing. I won't be offended if she doesn't sell though, as she is a doll as well and VERY beautiful! I am not breeding the mare to the same stallion again, as he is in West Virginia...I'll be breeding her to my Homozygous Black leopard stallion...he can be seen on my site www.mysticrockminis.com
