Judy, the last time Jetta strained to poop was when she was a few days old. At the time my vet said to give her 1 tsp. each of caster oil and cod liver oil, via tube syringe, and it did help. Did he go through his foal heat diareha yet? If so was he pooping fine after that? All I can say is that it wouldn't hurt to give him some Probios. You can call your vet and ask to be sure, but this is what I suggest. Let me know how it goes.

Judy: I get my probios in a tube...its easier to give to babies, well, in my opinion anyway.

Bobbi - what exactly is probios? I've heard of it but haven't seen it. Do you buy is at the feedstore or online?

Cyndy: You can either buy it on line and some feed stores/equine stores have it.

It is a formulation of enzymes & healthy bacteries that help aid digestion and "movement". It is given to horses alot during colic episodes, hard keepers, stress related factors, etc.

I always make sure that I have a tube or two on hand at all times. It isn't a cure for anything, just an aid.

I prefer the tubes because when I have had colic issues or digestive upset, the horse involved is usually off their feed anyway so giving it as a feed supplement isn't always useful.

It won't hurt. You know, these little babies are so affected by everything mom is doing. I've run the gammet with mine from the runs to the no poopy syndrome. When my vet was out last week, we were talking about it and he was like, awww, let nature take its course. Don't sweat it unless they stop eating/nursing or get lethargic or other obvious signs. I'd give him a little dose of it anyway if your vet agrees is cool with that.

There's so much change going on from colostrum, to milk, to starting to nibble on a little roughage, to tasting a little grain. Its no wonder their poor bellies can't get on a smooth track!
