Just thought a new thread might be in order. Who is still waiting?

I thought it might also be a good idea to start another thread for who have foaled. I know there is the birth announcement thread, but maybe one that remains a link for discussion about the new foals might be useful? I won't start that one though. I was kind of hoping some one else might.

I'm waiting. She is due in one week, 4.27. This is the first one I've dared try to foal out myself.

My first one became my Grand Prix dressage horse. The second one was her daughter. I finally got my first one pregnant a second time to Briar (the number one dressage horse in the world) and at 21 days pregnant her colon went through her mesentary. She was operated on and survived. They said no way she was still pregnant. She fought, and 7 days later they preg. checked her, and she was still pregnant. But, two weeks out her colon still wouldn't work (yes, she fought for two weeks) so I had to let her go. Along with that baby. At the same time, her daughter was stolen by a "friend" who broke a sale agreement on her. I've had some very bad times.

This one is my karma. I bought her as a greenbroke eight year old broodmare with three babies.(What I could afford after a $30,00 vet bill.) Within a year she was a champion in dressage, but was so nice, I bred her last year. So, we're a week away. All is going like clockwork, my friend is a super vet great a repro., and we're trying to do everything right. Hopefully we get a perfect, easy filly who will be able to follow in her mother's footsteps to Grand Prix. (Yes, she's that nice. Her dad was in the Olympics.)

Sora, my mare has a similar story. I bought her unbroke at 7 years old. She had never been out of the breeders pasture. I fell in love with her!! I sent her to my trainer to be started and he laughed at me!! 90 days later he said "I never would have believed that we could make her into a horse at that age." I competed on her last year and we did really well. I still have kids at home so my competition at this point is limited. I was just so impressed with her conformation, agility and good mind! She is never a problem; the folks at the stallion station, where I had her bred couldn't believe that she had never even been out of the pasture until she was 7 years old. So now I'm waiting for this baby and I've pinned my hopes on "it". By the time it's ready to start and show, my kids will all be grown and I'll be ready to get serious!!! Keep ypur fingers crossed!

I'm still waiting. Stella is due April 23. spent the night in the barn, she was pacing kicking and biting at her belly, veins showing everywhere. Fell asleep on the stall floor, woke up to a snoring mare! No baby.

Rita is 334 days, I love watching her on the camera, she does some funny things. I hardly ever catch her laying down when I am out there, but on camera I get to see it alot. She gets a kink in her tail(I have never seen that one before), rolling, looking at her belly and licking her lips. She is getting close.

I wait still......ETERNALLY IT SEEMS....my mare lives every night as if she'll foal...huge bag, jello hips, long loose vulva, belly kicking and biting, pawing, circling, up and down....can't test milk, as she's come to the point of kicking my head off my shoulders....so, I wait. Oh yeah, Linda just reminded me.....my mare too has started licking her lips....I had never seen a broodmare do that before, and it comes off as a little silly looking! haha! She also started digging up dirt clots from the ground and eating them...now what could that mean????? She's on Strategy, and has mineral snd salt licks, lacks nothing in her diet....?

Andrea--Nothing wrong with older mares! You don't have to go through that adolescent stage and so much basic conditioning. I SO would rather start later than too young, which I think is a major factor in lameness. The only problem with super talented mares is you want to have babies AND ride. I'm hoping I can afford embryo transfer next time around.

Definitely more sagging today and more filling in the udder and very little desire to move! I wonder if the weird weather will have an effect. It was really warm here, in the 70's, and now we've been quite cold, for here, and into the 40's at night. I'm hoping she waits until the weekend, but I put straw in today after disinfecting the stall.

Linda--I saw some tail kinking starting yesterday. It sounds like we're on the same track.

I'm new here... I've been staring at my foaling camera for an hour now, surfing the net! Haha. My Saddlebred mare, Suzy, is at day 327-- has a full udder (no signs of milk / fluid yet, but she is not about to let me try to squeeze any out), very noticeably lax hip and butt muscles, her vulva seems to be relaxing (and "pooching" in at the middle? Normal...?). But no baby yet. I'm like a kid at christmastime-I just want it to get here!!

Hey guys its been a while since I posted, but I am still waiting - she is day 326. Bagging up, no wax yet, vulva elongated last night and tail held high, however this evening, all back to normal and bag had reduced

Looking a bit twitchy still, my guess is within the next 10 days, but time will tell

I feel mean for not doing the nightly checks yet, but she was checked at 8.30pm tonight and will be seen again the morning! You are all very dedicated! I hope I know my mare well enough (as per last time, i slept one night in the horsebox, and that was the night she foaled!) to get it right! Fingers crossed

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting!!

No worries Cjskip - I've been dealing with a sick human child for the last few months and since my girl wasn't really close yet hadn't been posting much. I'm guessing from your posts this is your first time around. This is such a great board to be a part of. I found it last year and it's just nice to be able to "talk" to others who know what your are going through/dealing with.

I posted some pics of Iana on the "seeing the sign" thread...won't bore ya'll with them here too. I'm still waiting.......but I expect to be for a while still - ick!!

Laurie - I agree; and it also doesn't make much difference how many you've foaled when they were someone else's b/c when it's your mare you become much more nutty....

CJ - As for how many I've foaled....I was a foaling tech for a breeding farm when I was in college - I've foaled out hundreds of mares. I've foaled out my own mares 6 times so far. I am keeping the baby this year too; so that makes for more worry as well. You will be perfect for your girl!!!!

BTW - what is this DUHH that ya'll are all talking about, I missed that entirely.

Laurie, I don't know how I'd handle that if my mare were "due," (I know there isn't a due date really-but we'll grab hold of anything, right!) Anyway, if she were due on the 20th and hadn't delivered yet-jeezzzzz-would drive me bonkers!

I'm like having this new syndrome, where I want to hang out with the new "MOM" and get my foal fix vicariously. I'm like the poor old broodmare who can't get pregnant anymore and keeps hanging over the fence looking at the other mares with their babies. Has to be an extreme case of DUHH!

By the way Laurie, I just posted on another thread and thought your mare had delivered. My mistake. I'm wishing you foaling tonight though!

Beth, how is your mare doing? Getting close? Do you know her LBD?

Valerie, you have come to the right place! We're with ya! Your mare and mine were bred the same day, sounds like. LBD 4/26/07. Sounds like you will have a gorgeous foal.

Lisa, your experience is awesome! What a wonderful opportunity you have had! I didn't respond to that before, sorry. I get bogged down sometimes.

I'm sleeping on a hammock on the porch tonight (unless I get my cameras going. Maybe the batteries are bad). Anyway, I'll camp out, cause I know she is close. I know-I know-I know-if only I could click my heels together and had a dog named Toto!

We are still waiting. Dreamer is was due 4/20.
She is up and down, this morning I dumped her grain into her tub, and she proceeded to lay down flat and groan. I thought that was it, but no, false alarm. She got up and ate, went outside to do the same thing, all day.
I hope tonight is it, but she has very little udder, she is all relaxed around the tail head and underneith, and her belly has dropped. This is a maiden mare, in case you hadn't guessed already, she is driving me nuts (or is that just the lack of sleep).

I must say that having this place has been a wonderful experience both for learning and entertainment. My mare is "due" May 12, but really starting to show signs. Poor thing she is so large and just slowly walks along.

Having this place sure makes the long foalwatching go by quicker. Although I have a 2 year old that does not sleep thru the night yet so if it is not the horse its the baby!!

Michelle, I know where you're coming from ...as I too have a 2 yr old who won't sleep (never does, somehow she doesn't require sleep as I do)

I am currently waiting for the next foal to hit the ground...have my cam on, pager on my side. Milk test strips said 3 pads with the 4th partially turned. Typically, that means not tonight, but within 48 hrs....but they can change fast, so i'll be at the ready! My other mare Onyx proved that "not tonight" doesn't mean she can't go at 10:30 in the morning (when you finally go to sleep) haha!
Her milk is cloudy yellow and STICKY like honey...she is at the same consistency as onyx when she foaled this morning. Guess I better go stare at her some more.
Good luck to all tonight!
CJ hang in there, your day will come!

Thanks Diana. I had to laugh. "Guess I'd better go stare at her some more!" I so know what you mean!

OKAY-HOPE YOU HAVE FOALS TONIGHT. My vet is out of town for a week, so-get this- I AM HOPING SHE DOES NOT FOAL UNTIL AFTER HIS RETURN! I can't believe I said that!

I've got 3 due in May, after having a maiden go 359 last year I quit counting. Must admit I didn't loose any sleep waiting on her and yes I was there.

This is Oreo, I think she will be the first to go.

Hello...we are still waiting on Annie to foal..this whole not know her due date is killing me..I don't know if we are early, on time , over due...I can tell she is progressing slowly..but this is my first and I don't know how many for her..she looks to be dropping some since yesterday..looking more ribby, was very sweaty last night..kicking her belly and tail swishing all day..we live about 300' back off the road and my entire yard is fenced in minus the driveway so we put a chain going up across the driveway and we are just letting her walk the yard..(grass needs mowed anyway..lol) but she is loving it..she even has come up to the window to look in..but her favorite spot is the front yard..she will just lay down out there..for awhile and then she will try to roll..sometimes she makes it over..LOL Well just wanted to add that we are stillllll waiting...sorry for rambling!!

You're welcome Laurie! I'm not a patient person either. I do enjoy watching her progress though. I also like watching the foal move, when it does. It doesn't happen too often yet. But when it does move, it's like it's doing cartwheels.

I'm sorry, I do mean to put Dora's picture on here. I'll do that soon.

I will tell Mike you said hi. :-) Hey, if I tell him you said he's great, they'll be no living with him. lol

Hey Laurie, I finally have a picture of Dora. She's a little over 8 months preggo. Do you think she looks about right, belly size wise? Did you see a lot of movement at 8 months, because I don't see much. A couple of times I saw it move a lot for a few seconds then stop. So it's either a lot at one time or nothing at all. That concerns me somewhat. I hope it's normal.

Lisa, DUHH is Tim's anacronym for: "Dysfunctional Undelivered Horse Handlers' Syndrome." It fits, no?

I'm inexperienced when it comes to pictures (and foaling too, for that matter) LOL! I'm just learning to judge a little bit by what I've seen on some of the web sites that post mares who foaled within X number or days after picture was taken.

There are so many variables, I'm learning, yet some conditions seem like they OUGHT to give us a pretty clear picture of when a mare will foal. I mean, there is only so much a mare can control, right?

For instance, I recall a post about the foal getting into the foaling postion, which causes one side or the other to look huge, while the other looks flat. But how long before foaling that can occur, I have no idea.

So personally, I now hesitate to comment unless I see something I know is distinct, for foaling. These mares do have us guessing all the way! I am going to go back over my posts and keep the record of my mare, so next time, because of course there will be a next time, I'll know more what to expect.

One thing is for sure-our mares are progressing, since they, "don't go backwards," as someone pointed out, LOL. But there are times I wonder!

Okay, let's have babies and may no one have to wait a year! LOL

Obviously, one of the rarer side effects of DUHH is repeating oneself! LOL
Cj, when the foal "drops" the belly changes positon, shape...yes. But I think you have it backwards. When looking from behind the mare, she'll look relatively lopsided for a while. After the foal moves into position, the lopsidedness (?) isn't so noticable....they appear flatter on BOTH sides...and the side view drops more, into a point at the lowest part of the abdomen (thus...the "v" look)

oh, and foaling position is typically 7-14 days before foaling. In some mares, it is very noticable, not so much in others

Oh. Okay. I thought someone had said that one side gets bigger and the other flat, and that is when the baby is in the foaling position. Guess I got it wrong.

Yes, DUHH can make one do all kinds of things-including reapeating oneself, forgetting who has had foals and who is still waiting and all kinds of other information! LOL

Thanks for clearing that up.

Oh Diana, don't tell me it's over a week after foaling position!! Ugh!

My mini donkey has had signs for weeks. I feel like I have been watching her for days on end. She is flabby, flabby, flabby on her hind end. She is huge. She has her tail raised. She has paced the stall for days, rubs her bum against the wall several times a day, changes feet when standing, bites at her sides, has clear whitish milk that is somewhat sticky, has an udder, and still no baby!!

But, her due date is May 14, although she is a third time mother so is it too much to hope she goes soon? Anyway, she is still huge at the sides.

I have been hoping that the foal would go into position and I'd only have 24 hours to wait. I am absolutely going nuts. I adore this little mini donk. Everyday, I give her pregnancy massages and rub her back and muscles - hey, just had a thought, maybe that's why she's holding out!

On a happier note, our little mini foal is sooo cute! Diana, was it you that said to hold him like a baby and he'd go to sleep? If so, thank you! That was sooo much fun and he absolutely loved it.

Just waiting for the other mini mare and the mini donk now. I may go nuts before this is over, but at least I will feel better then!!!

McKay, yes, the rocking thing was me. I love to go to the barn in the mornings and rock babies while drinking my coffee! And, I don't know how mini donkeys do it, or what their time fram is, so don't hold me to that on her. I'm just telling y'all what I've seen from my own experience, and most books will say b/w 7-10 days they "v" when the foal turns. I do have a mare or two who look lopsided till the end, they're so small that you can't tell when baby has turned...and they rarely "v". I don't always use that as a sign of foaling, b/c you can't always tell! But when they do, it is obvious.

Diana, I can't talk about going nutty-buddy too much because you have waited longer than me. My mini mare is due today. Not going to happen. If she puts me through 36 more days, I'll go from my farm to the funny farm.

She'll foal in her stall or paddock. I can see her from the house if she's in the paddock, and on cam if she goes in her stall. I haven't let her out since she hit 4 squares. I have had like 4 pots of coffee this morning, and WHO NEEDS SLEEP?!LOL (i do) Leave it to this one to break all the rules. Honestly, she doesn't act like she'll make it to dinner time...but we'll see.

well, no news is good news? I tested her again tonight, just to make sure...and yep, she's still at a 4 on the milk test strip thing. I have stared and stared at her, and thought, "3 pads means 48 hrs to go....and she stayed on 3 pads for 4 days...4 pads means 24 hrs to go...and in 7 minutes she'll have been on 4 pads for more than 24 hrs...." Then it hit me, and I figured out what the problem was! This mare has NO CONCEPT of time! DUHH!!

This is actually the very first time that the milk test strips have failed me....BUT i am very grateful that they lied and made me wait more, than if they'd lied, and my mare foaled early and I wasn't present. I guess there are just no absolutes with mares except that if they are bred, they will deliver, eventually! We just need to hang in there, huh? Sleep will come!

ok, my mare has now gone more than 36 hrs after getting all 4 pads on the EM Quant test....and still has not foaled. She went 4 days on 3 pads. She obviously has no concept of time.....any body else ever had one do that? She should have foaled in like 12 hrs....all 4 turned in less than 7 seconds! Still no baby! I am beginning to worry that something is wrong.

Do you have any suggestions?? to the correct term? Due DATE? I think I know NOW!

Diana,

I am going nuts for you! I cannot believe she is doing this! I can't imagine all the anticipation and lack of sleep. I am hoping she goes soon!

Goldie, my mini, had wax yesterday at 11 am. Still no baby. I had her on Domperidone so I wonder if that could make her wax (???)> Still, her due date was yesterday so I keep hoping it means something.

I am not a very patient person on things like this. I get too excited about the foaling and it drives me nuts!

Diana, we're all hoping for you!!! Please let us know the minute it's over and let's hope it's soon!

ok Girls..I post on here every few days or so..I have Annie the pregnant percheron...I am still waiting..she does have a V now...But here is what I saw this morning...I went out to feed and turn out the horses..I alway brush them out and I always check Annie over real good for any changes...I saw like a small amount of blood that had dropped onto her leg and was dry and then on one of her teats it looked like a sore at first but now after looking at I think it was just some gunk but I could see more spots of blood and she had what appeared to be dark colored ?? dripping out of the same teat...eventually this morning it has turned clear...have any of you seen the teat bleed before dripping milk...this girl is stressing me out...anybody have this happen before??? I am not 100% it was dripping from the teat or running down the teat to drip off but I am fairly certain it is coming out of teat and running back a little ways and dripping! I did check her vulva and at the very bottom of it there was the same colored discharge there but just a very small drop, so maybe it came from her vulva....I did not see anymore come from the vulva...it could be several things going on at the same time....she will only let me look for a minute or so before getting frustrated that I am messing with her private areas...sorry so long...I have never been through this before and I don't want to miss anything...

Wanda, to determine if it is actually coming from the teat, I would try to wash as much away as she will allow and then milk a few drops out. If you see it again, do the same thing. Sometimes it is difficult to tell exactly where blood comes from, as it can run into other parts. And a mare's utter is typically pretty gross anyway, so it might be some of that.

I'm sorry I have no help for you if it actually is blood. Someone else maybe can help. Same goes for vulva area blood. No experience. I'm sure you are worried.

Did you read Laurie's post above? She also saw some blood on the edges of the vulva.

Diana, I just don't know what to say. So sorry for all your stress. Have you seen the baby move? Of course they don't so much near time of delivery. Wow. I wish I could be more help. You have my thoughts and good vibes though.

If you don't get responses soon, you might start a new thread with an "372 day pregnant concern" (or something like that). Then more people might click on it and respond. Just a thought.

PLEASE-as McKay said, let us know immediately what happens. I'm hoping she is just one of those independant mares that didn't read the book!

Thanks Cj for the response...

I do not think it is blood now..I see more coming from the vulva..it is a brown fluid somewhat clear but more brownish...could she be leaking amnio fluid...could this mean she is getting closer..like really close..she is not eating her hay at all tonight and has been very slow this week to eat it...she is still eating her grain good...but slow...doing all the typical butt rubbing..foot stomping..biting at belly...etc..so I guess I am going to watch her even closer...she has definitely dropped..her vulva is still pink inside...what color will it turn before delivering...
Well no sleep tonight...but it will be worth it in the end...I really want to be present during foaling...

Heather, LOL!!!

Wanda, I don't think the amniotic fluid would normally leak. It ought to be clear, if it does. Perhaps you are getting some old blood-but I'm not sure about that either. I don't know if horses "spot" before delivery, but I believe I have seen that symptom mentioned before. Don't recall if a response was made.

Is she 'V'd?" Her vulva will get very dark pink or even reddish, I've read. Are you able to test her milk? She certainly sounds like she is getting ready, with the butt pushing and stomping and so on.

My mare, on the other hand, has a PH of almost 8, which is more than yesterday! So I guess no foal tonight. She just might wait until the vet comes back, which would be fine with me.

It's odd, but now that I'm prepared, I'm less anxious for her to have it than I was before. Now, I'm like Okay, when you're ready.

The camera helps too though! I hated that every two hour trip outside. My little short haired dog, that won't hardely leave my side, is also grateful!

I am hoping that tonight is it for you!!!!! And I hope that in between checks, you can get some sleep. I know how you feel about wanting to watch it. Me too.

I want to witness it and also want to be there in case I need to intervene. I'd feel awful if I was asleep and that happened. HOWEVER, a human can only take so much sleep deprivation before we become looney, for real. And most people have to work, go to school and so. Can't always be there 24/7.

I wanted to take a trip early last month. Threw that out when I found out I was a month off on her "due" date. I missed the trip, but still no foal! Ah well, maybe in July or August, I'll feel free to go. In the meantime, I'm sticking close to my baby! O.K. good foaling vibes are again being beamed your way.

Wanda, Mares don't typically leak amniotic fluid. If she is, something is wrong. Here's how to rule it out. Amniotic fluid contains alot of protein....if in the mare's tail, it'll make it hard and crunchy as if you've just starched her tail. I don't know that mares "spot" either, but during preparation to deliver, many capillaries in the birth canal rupture causing the possibility of a small amount of blood here and there. If your mare is acting normally in the front end, (eating, drinking, etc.)I wouldn't worry about the back end. It'll happen when it happens...these mare try out patience, but only they truly know how this is supposed to be done..LOL. Good luck with your mare

Update on Freckles the Eternally Pregnant Spotted Wonder Horse....she STILL hasn't foaled. This will be the 3rd day after getting all 4 pads on the milk test strips...and at this point, I am going to assume that she just produces milk with more calcium than any other horse on earth, and earlier than delivery. She looks very ready, acts miserable, and so on, but obviously she's not ready quite yet for some reason. I am going to resort to checking the color of her milk as a better indicator....3 nights ago, when I checked her and she scored the 4 pads, it was a bright yellow...I'll check today and see how far we've gotten.

Good Morning All-
Heather, Wish this had been posted yesterday it sure would have taken the edge off of me!!!! That was sooo funny!

Wanda-That's the same thing happening to my mare it's a clear yet has a brownish tinge to it almost like iodine.Wanda have you look inside the Vulva area look on the top portion of it you might find slight blood. Per my vet nothing to worry about.

CJ-Thanks for asking, I believed the baby just positioned herself! Poor Spring she was so uncomfortable yesterday, by night feeding she was better, still hasnt bagged up :-(

Vet said within 24-36 hours we shall see!

Take care,
L

Diana...LOL.you poor thing...I cannot believe she is doing this to you..they definitely have a mind of their own don't they.. Sending Foaling vibes your way~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Laurie...I have not seen blood..I thought it was at first but after futher investigation I realized it was from the vulva and it had drained enough over night that it left a line down her leg and was then dripping from her teat from running down..it was a very slow drip but it was dripping...I saw just a small amount of disharge that was clotting up on the bottom of her vulva but I did not see anything at the top but to be honest I wasn't looking specifically at the top either...when I spread the vulva apart some I could see that there was the brown fluid (exactly like you said...looks like iodine) in there but now last night and today I don;t see any...hhhmmmm they just have to keep us worried...maybe that is what they do just to make sure we will all still give them all the extra attention...LOL
She is getting the "V" but I am not sure she is 100% "V'd" yet....Being that this is my first.... she is an old pro so she is helping me through this...I have noticed that she is much more stressed during the day then at night...I am hoping for a daytime delivery and for a filly..but gut tells me it is a colt... Here are a couple pics of her today and then I will put one on from a couple weeks ago...I am also including one of her and my quarter horse....please don't panic...I know he is extremely skinny, we just rescued him 2 weeks ago and believe it or not he does look better than when we got him but I just thought this was a nice picture..this is the closest they have been to each other..there is a fence there but you cannot see it ....he looked at her like I will stay by your side..(well as close as I can get to it..LOL

Diana, I wonder if this is one of those rare times that a mare needs to be induced? Since you are getting those results, and she is miserable and looks ready, perhaps she needs to be checked out by a vet? Maybe for some reason she just isn't going into active labor? Just a thought. Keep us posted and I feel for you. No sleep is really tough to handle after awhile. I know you're a great horse mommie!
