I'm new to this place, but i'm not new to horses. I've had horses for over 35 yrs. But it has been 18 yrs. since i've had a foal born, my one and only.
My question is, we adopted a BLM burro (it will be 7 weeks this week) and we did not know she was pregnant.
We had her about 2 weeks and she started gaining weight so I thought I was feeding to much. Turns out that she is indeed pregnant. In the last 3 weeks she has gotten absolutely HUGE. Our problem is, we have no clue when she was bred so we don't know when the baby is due. She's been bagging up on and off for the last 3 weeks now. One day a nice bag, the next day it's only half full. Also about 3 weeks ago she started to 'wink' her private area and drip a drip or 2 or 3 of blood. This happens about every 4 or 5 days. Dr. said sometimes it's normal as the baby moves closer to time.
Well, like I said, we have no clue when she was bred, so no clue when it's due.
I see the signs of bags (on and off) and she is swollen in the rear, but no other signs at all. No pointy belly (one day she'll be quite ROUND, and the next day she is more hanging down but not pointy) no wax on her teets either.
So, anyone have any other signs to really watch for? She's going to drive me nuts trying to figure out when.
Had the dr. out to give our horse his shots, and the dr. didn't want to palpate her because he says she is small and Burros have a tendancy to tear. But he gave us his best guess and said no more than 6 to 8 weeks. Well, that was almost 4 weeks ago. The blm people told us she was a yearling, our vet said said she is probably closer to 2 if not in her second year already.
has any1 got any advice for me to i have the same story as kat purchased a mare and foal 1 month ago since then the mare has got bigger and bigger we have come up with the conclusion that the foal isn't hers and she has adopted it. Anyway her teets are waxing up and there is so much milk coming out its like a tap!!! but i dont know how long shes got so called out vet he couldn't do a internal so took blood it came back negitive!! we can see something moving in there but dont know what to do next. please help! emma x
Is she still nursing the foal? If not, if she is waxing and has milk dripping, keep a close eye on her. How old is the one at her side?
