My maiden mare has been dripping colostrum and finally milk for the past two weeks or so. Shw ill wax and them drip. The milk is all over her legs. Still no foal.
Do I have to worry about the colostrum? Should I try to milk her to save it, if there is any left? She is really good about being handled in her udder area. I am sure I could do it. That is if it needs to be done.
I would first call the vet for their opinion, but I would think saving it would be a good idea. You don't want to have no colostrum when the little one arrives. Better to have it bottled than end up with none I would think.
Hi Lori When Madonna had her foal...which was dead but that is not the point...she dripped milk for 2 weeks, on and off with wax ....I would save as much as possible and freeze it and never forget that in most cases...the baby WILL come soon so watch out!!! I wish you the best of luck!!!Since talking to many breeders i have heard of a lot of mares who can drip milk for weeks!!
Jazz dripped milk for two days before foaling. A friend of mine had one mare that would drip for two weeks before delivering several healthly foals. It would be a good idea to milk her and freeze it for baby. Use disposible baby bottle liners.
