my 22 year old broodmare is showing wax this morning, small and only on one teat, I did a milk strip test and it does not show the milk to be at the point of foaling. This is an experienced broody, never gone early before, tail head and muscles dont' give me a clear thought she is ready, how fast can a mare get ready? And should I be really worried at 321 days??? May 7th would be her 2 week early date, if her due date is May 21.

Carmen - at 321 she is within normal range to foal. However, they usually follow their pattern. She may just have squeezed the udder harder than usual while laying down?? If she is bagging really full and you think she is too early, contact your vet about possible prophylactic antibiotic therapy for placentitis. I'm no expert, so please check with your vet.

Well after a restless day, she got comfy and settled down and had a good night, she is much more comfy today and I felt good about turning her out in her paddock this morning, I left her gate open so she could come back to her stall is she felt the need. Will keep my eye on her, but I don't think she is quite ready.
