My mare deliverd a beautiful bay filly yesterday on Easter sunday! This is my first foaling. I have seen the filly nurse but Im not sure if she is getting enough. The mare seems to be tender and squeals and raises her hind leg when the foal goes to nurse. She doesnt push the foal away. How can I tell if the foal is getting enough milk? The mare is barely green broke. So she doesnt do too good with me or anyone touching her back there. So any advice is helpful thanks! |

Hi Emma, your mare sounds normal. They usually are tender the first few days and the raising a leg and squealing is very typical. The fact that she isn't pushing the foal away is good. You can have the vet run an IgG test on her to make sure her antibodies are good. Unless your foal is acting hungry, I wouldn't worry too much. |

Emma my mare foaled yesterday too. She is doing the exact same thing. Vet was out today and both mom and baby are doing great. Foal was tested and is in the excellent range. Do not worry he is fine. |

Thanks to everyone for the advice. The filly that we named LILLY like the Easter Lilly. Seems to be doing ok. She is nursing about every 20-30 min. Is that a good range? She is active when the mare will bring her out of the barn. I had to make her come out this morning so I could make sure the baby was active enough. She was running around and nosing into everything. Sucked on my finger so I think she is getting enough milk. Boy I sure hope so. I did call the vet and she said Lilly seemes to be doing good. May have her to come out this week. |

If they are on their feet looking tired trying to nurse, they aren't getting enough. Berry would think about going to sleep then get up and go try to nurse again. (All turned out fine. Ruby let down a full bag a couple days later. Berry us 1year 5 days and 16 hands now!) |
