Hello
I know there are always post about overdue mares this time of year. But I need advice from anyone who has experienced a prolonged geatation. My APHA mare is at 392 days today. This will be her 3rd foal. I know she is still in foal (she has had 2 ultrasounds in the last 3 weeks). The vets seem to think the foal will be born weak and small. Has anyone else been through this and have the foal survived? Thanks for the help and support. |

Oh you poor thing - 392 days! My mare went 373 days this year - baby is 11 days old today. Had no problems with the birth and both mom and baby are doing fine. He was small and had some trouble figuring out how to work those long legs but he was up an nursing within an hour, running around the stall by the next day and he hasn't stopped since LOL. Hope everything goes well with your mare also! |

Why are they that small if they are overdue? |

what the vets say is that sometime in the pregnancy they did not develop normally or the growth was slowed. That is why they have not made it out into the world.. Foals develop what they need to survive outside of the womb the last week they are in there... Nature has its reasons for them not to come out I guess... It is just hard one us who are waiting. |

Mary your story is incouraging. I would love to hear more positive stories, seems like I hear the doom and gloom latley. |

Tiffany, think positive!!! You still have a live foal in there. You have no reason to believe that it won't be viable. Hopefully, you will be there when the time comes and can assist if needed. Take care of your mare and you're doing the best you can do. My heart goes out to you and a lot of us are thinking about you and hoping for the best! You can't do much better than that!  |
