My 3 wk old foal starting eating the dirt in the turnout. He does not seem to eat it in his stall (next to the turnout). I have 2 salt licks in his stall - plain and mineral added. He nurses well and is starting to nibble on mom's hay, but is not yet interested in her grain. I had a previous 2 yo filly who ended up with sand colic from this practice (at a different stable, though). Is this a normal? Should I be concerned?
My week old foal is eating dirt and rocks too! She seems to be exploring her environment with her mouth! We have a grassy pasture and she imitates mom as she tries to eat the grass too. I am not sure if this is normal, but I have been told that they put everything in their mouths!
Stella is also exploring the whole world--including the people in it--with her mouth! wood, dirt, gates, shoes (she loves shoes), hands (naughty), buckets, you name it.
10 day old Magic Evenstar (aka baby dot), also eating, tasting, licking everything around her. Tasting wood, sand, dirt, tips of th grass etc.
