Hi, I am new to this site and need some HELP please. I am a first time horse owner and have a pregnant maiden mare named Angel Baby. This morning I went out to her and she is tight swoll and very agitated. Her vulva is swoll and sse is passing alot of gas. Is this a sign of early labor? When I went to let the other horses out she just stands in a corner in her stall and will not even try to come out. I am so confused and nervous. Feel like a first time mom here. Any help would be great. She has also walked away from her feed which is definitely not usual for her. |

Leona, I'm no expert, but I'll answer anyway 
My experience is just the one time with my mare who foaled last Tuesday. All I can say is she exhibited a lot of weird behaviors before foaling--none of them predictable or explainable. But, your mare's udders don't look quite ready to me yet. The teats will probably point downwards (and not toward each other) before she's completely ready. Not that that means you shouldn't be vigilant. My mare actually went 360 days. She was waxed for a whole week, then started dripping milk. Her belly never really v'd out though, and I didn't really have any other signs. I just went out to the barn on a routine check and she was laying down. I lifted up her tail and lo and behold, the sac was showing! So just goes to show that the safest and best way to know is to keep checking and making note of changes in her physical and behavioral norms. Best of luck to you! |

Thank you so much.... I have been keeping such a close eye on her today and now and it storming here and I have alot of people saying that this is the kind of weather she would foal in. I am soo EXCITED. I cannot wait and am proabably doing alot od psyching myself out.. LOL... Thank you so much for for your response.. and Congratulations on you new addition. |

Hi Leona,
I agree with Lori, her bag doesn't look quite ready. The one picture from the back looks as though she may have dropped. Do you have a side shot of her? Maiden mares don't always follow "the rules" so you may not get all of the signs that you'll read about on this board. If she will let you, express some fluid from one of her teats and check the color and consistency. It will turn opaque and quite sticky just prior to foaling. Pretty mare! Is the top of her but, near her tail, loose and flaccid? If I had to throw out a guess just based on her udder, I would say 5 days. Keep us posted! |

Here is her side view... Please excuse her being a little dirty.. I cannot keep her off of the ground.. LOL.... Yes her tail is very loose and she is lifting it up ALOT.. and swishing from side to side... I might just be becoming a little anxious as this is our first foal... Thank you for all of your help.. I need all of it I can get...

She still looks like she is carrying high. She will drop before she foals and her belly will look a lot closer to the ground.} |

Thank you that is a little disapointing to me as I am very apprehensive about her giving birth... I am about looney actually regarding it.. |

So was I, Leona. I spent at least 6 weeks checking Hollywood at 3-6 hour intervals--down to 2-3 hour intervals near the end. Sleep deprivation for sure. I think we all go through the same frustration so you're not alone! |

I am glad to know that I am not the only one or losing my mind. My kids think that I have lost my mind, i am checking on Angel all the time. I keep telling myself that I am not going out there again and of course turn right around and go.
I think that I will have to sleep for a week when this is finally over .. |

Hi , I'm not sure what I'm looking at' but my 7 yr maidem mare is acting VERY strange. She is raking her teeth down the sides of her stall. She shows all the signs of imminent delivery, yet is not due for two weeks.Her bag is full, but milk looks like very yellow urine. The foal is in position, yet she is eating well and acting out of character. She is a Kentucky Mountain, if that makes any difference, and normally around 900-925 pounds. |
