Hi, I used to be on this board alot when my mare was supposedly pregnant (about a year ago). It turned out she wasn't, so I stopped visiting. Well, to make a long story short, I have two brand new colts from two different mares One gray and one bay. We had no idea they were pregnant and they delivered 12 hours apart. We gave a tetanus to the mom, clean the umbilicus daily, gave foal start to the baby. i talked to the vet, and he said the only other thing he could do is send off some blood to check if the colostrum is good. The babies are very active at one and 1 1/2 days old, do you think that is necessary? (By the way, these are minis) (Message edited by toni on March 09, 2007) |

One other question, should we let both colts and moms in the same field together? We have separated them from our stallion, and other mare. |

I leave my mares solo until about 10 days old. I give a foal and enema, and treat their umbilicus, give foal respond, and worm the mare. I also give all foals 3 mls pen and 2.5 mls Gentocin for three days. We also give rhodo plasma day one. I also had two colts last night! |

I had 2 mares foal 24 hr apart in Nov, kept them apart for 2 weeks then put the four of them together, just give them room to get away from each other if they want to. During the 2 weeks they were only separated by a fence panel in their pens, so they got to rub noses. After 8 weeks I put them out with the other horses(not stud) have had no problems. |

My friend who has a huge farm foals out a lot of thoroughbred foals for various clients a year so one year foaled some Gypsy Vanners for a lady and they had to be the cutest things I ever saw. |

That's my little Breezy girl. She is a miracle baby. She was chased into a fence by some dogs at three weeks old and broke her neck. It was touch and go, but the bones have healed and there was no nerve damage. She didn't get to grow up with any of the foals, but she is back out with everybody now at 8 months old.http://www.highvalleygypsyhorses.com/userimages/g_3.20.jpg |

You should be proud she is way above cute, then again I am partial. If you ever feel the need to dump a Gypsy, it will have a good home in Florida! |
