I tried the 'drop of milk on black pastic' technique for the first time. It was indeed very reliable!
Just a quick question: in the article it mentions that you would check the mare at the same time each day etc. It also mentions that once the liquid has become opaque the mare will foal within 24 hours. How often would you check a mare that is really close to foaling? Still only once a day? I checked this mare am and pm. Saturday around 4 pm she was just starting to change from clear liquid to slightly milky. When I check her the next morning it was opague. She foaled at 9 pm Sunday night. I guess my quesion is how frequently you check the mare and after the change in the electrolytes occures how soon after that could the mare foal. I guess it would always be within 24 hrs, right? But how soon after the change occures could she foal?
This experiment was particulary intersting with this mare as she usually does not develope a large udder nor does she wax. If I wouldn't have done the 'drop of milk on black plastic test' I thought she would have foaled for sure a couple of days earlier than she did.
Thanks!!

HI JOS, I have a vaccine question. I have been on schedule for vaccines with my mare throughout her pregnancy. In January, I gave her the last Equine Rhino shot and in the middle of February, I gave her the Update of the 5-way +west nile. My mare will be at 330 on March 2nd and my vets secretary called and said the vet will be in the neighborhood and wondered if the Mare needed a pre-foaling vaccine. I wasn't aware of a pre-foal shot and what is this? I thought that was the 5- way + west nile vaccine.
thanks!
