I have foaled for about 25 years and have yet to have a mare go this far over. Today she is 360 days and has a bag and is huge so I assume with the development of the bag the foal is still alive, plus if it had died she would have most likely spit it out. Should I be concerned or just go with it? |

Cathy, I wouldn't worry too much yet. My vet said he has seen mares go 12 to almost 13 months. I would just keep a close eye on her in case something was to go wrong. Good luck and keep us posted on new baby! |

Thanks, I found Jos's article after posting and it put me at ease. I keep an eye on all of them, my maternity paddocks are all in view of my back porch which my bedroom opens too and I install foal alerts in every mare. |

The average range of gestational duration is 320-370 days, so it would appear that your mare is still within the "average" and has not gone "long term" yet! Add to that the fact that gestational durations of pregnancies ending earlier in the year tend to be longer than those ending in the height of the breeding season and - assuming there is no chance of alkaloid (endophyte infected fescue) exposure - all seems normal to me! |

Hi Cathy, In 2003 my mare foaled at 379 days. She was bred only one day so we know exactly when it happened. The foal was a little on the small side but has grown and is a wonderful trail horse. Although lack of sleep and worry took it's toll! Hopefully yours will deliver soon! Good foaling vibes to you. Jan O |

She foaled yesterday at 366 days and the foal was a nice big boy. My vet did caution me that mares who do go long term such as yours do tend to have smaller foals, I am pleased though this is a big nice colt, just not eager to come out. |
