My vet was out Monday to give the booster vaccines and check the mare, she is at day 307. He noted that the baby was much lower in the abdomen now than it had been a month ago. I asked him if that was a problem and he said no. Said the baby was moving and was positioned well. Today his office called to plan another visit for him to come out in two weeks just to check the mare again. They specifically said not to worry but of course I am. Have any of you ever had your mares foal change position like that? Our last foal was 4 years ago and we lost a much loved mare, I don't know if the vet is just being super cautious or whether I need to worry. |

Martha, Yes they do "drop" prior to foaling. Sometimes its more noticable on older mares or mares with multiple foalings. Also the fetus grows 60% during the last trimester and as the baby gets bigger and heavier, and as tendons and muscles relax, it's more noticeable. Sounds like your Vet is doing a good job. Good luck and let us know how it goes!! Elise |

Thanks Elise, she is older and has had several babies. That makes me feel better. |

Martha, I'm putting up some photos I took yesterday of a mare that is due in about a week. This is her 4th foal. Now mind you, she is 16-2 and very wide. She has "dropped" you can compare her to yours as far at the "belly" goes. Hope this helps. http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u33/KruegerRanch/holly_profile_7_18_07.jpg |
