I have a mare that is not due until 11-4 but is showing alot of signs that she should foal at any time. This mare lost her baby last time because it did not get out of the sac and we did not find it until it was too late. She gave absolutely no warning that she was about to have this baby, we had check on her about 30 minutes before and then when we recheck, it appeared she had the baby as soon as we left the barn. Anyway, I did the calcium test strips on Monday and she was registering 4 squares, on Tuesday registered all 5 squares which should indicate a 95% chance of foaling in the next 12-24 hours. It is now Thursday and no baby. She has been biting her sides, stomping the ground, rubbing the wall with her back side, broke out in a sweat at one time. All of these syptoms have been off and on since Monday. She does not really seem distressed just irritated. Is this something to worry about? How long does all of this normally last? With her first one her milk never really turned white. I noticed it is going from clear yellow to now a cloudy color, but not milky white yet. Please Help!!! Should I call my vet or is this normal? Fogot to mention that she is moving her tail straight up and down a lot and periodically will lay down and then roll to side get back up and then a few minutes later all is normal and she goes to sleep. |

oooh.. she sounds very close! I wouldn't leave her if at all possible. It's pretty normal to have a prolonged or stop and go 1st stage labor. I feel your pain though I had a mare do that for 2 weeks! then she finally gave birth at 5:30pm after being fairly normal all day. So don't leave her but maybe try to be inconspicuous and quiet; some mares will delay until they think they're alone. Good luck I bet she'll have it real soon. |

Renee- I've seen them do all those things for days sometimes, we had a mare this last year that actually dripped milk off and on for two days before she foaled. I'd check her as frequently as you can but don't stress too much, it's probably pretty unlikely that you'd have the same thing occur with this foal as what happend to the last one. Still, I understand your worry, my mare lost her foal after about 24 hours last year, he was born with a blind pouch, she'll foal in April this year and you can bet I'm going to be stressing too until I see all parts are where they should be and operational! Good luck! Ev |

A November foal, interesting! I would love to have fields full of them without anyone knowing! Did you do the calcium test again? Sounds like you are about to have an early Halloween baby! |

Our new Filly was born 10/20 at 1:30 am. It took a while for Mom to warm up to baby, but now she is very protective. This filly is a fireball. At about 3 hours old if you ran your hand down her back she would start bucking (funny for 3 hours old but will not be so funny in a few days). Now I need help with names Sire : A Strong Dollar Dam: Almost Illegal http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/abarnet3/10212006231.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/abarnet3/10212006228.jpg |

She is a Tennesse Walking Horse. All horses that were born in the previous year will turn 1 on Jan 1 except horses born after October 1. She will not be considered 1 until Jan. 2008. This will be a tremendous advantage once it comes time for training and showing. We live in Alabama so it does not get as cold here. |

Cathy the TWHA and MFTHA allow this for purposes of show only. For everything else they are still considered as yearlings on Jan. 1st. It is a huge advantage for weanling classes, and a big advatage for yearling and a little for 2yr olds. After 2 it is a moot point. I raise Mfts and I will say the only advatage I really see is that for the 2 yr old futurity they are a few months older when they are started. Personally I think that is too young to have these babies working that hard. |
