My mare was bred May 7th and a few days following for more covering. Today -July 17 - she is in extreme heat and also noticed her teets are big and dripping milk. Does this mean she aborted the foal? Why is she in heat along with producing milk? I am so confused and pray she is okay. She is approx 17 yrs old and a maiden mare. She eats well and is with great health/weight. We have made sure to keep her happy and calm due to her age. Can someone help me? I am more worried about her making milk right now.
The chances are that she is still pregnant, and a hormonal upset associated with the pregnancy is causing the milk production and estrus ("heat") display. If you are concerned though, and to be sure, you should talk to your veterinarian and have them evaluate your mare.
