We have a new mare who was tested for Lepto due to blindness and she has titers the vet says. She had a healthy foal after this info was discovered. My question is this... the vet recommended vaccinating our entire breeding herd and the new mare with a cattle lepto vaccine. Is this advisable? Is it contageous from horse to horse? Is there a chance of abortion with a Lepto possitive mare?
It depends on if the Lepto is a modified live or killed vaccine. If a modified live is used, then there is a risk to any other pregnant horses, and it is advisable to vaccinate all or none.
I would keep the mares urine and feces away from other horses. Lepto is shed I believe in the urine.
You should also call the previous owners and find out if the mare was ever vaccinated for Lepto, once they are vaccinated they will show titers, but that may not mean she has it.
