I read on a draft horse website that stated white clover can cause abortion, as well as, an article on thoroughbred breeding that said pregnant mares are kept muzzled so they can't eat it. However, while obtaining my animal science degree, I studied forage crop production and never heard of issues with white clover, other than excess salivation. I asked my vet, who is very experienced in equine reproduction, and he said white clover does not cause abortion. Yet, I have a lot of white clover in my pastures, and a newly pregnant maiden mare, so I'm still concerned. Does anyone have any concrete information on this topic? Thanks.

I don't have any concrete information on it, but I do have white clover in my pastures too, and possibly my hay, although it was a couple of years ago that it was seeded and I don't remember for absolutely certain what clovers are in it. We have had 9 foals, and (touching lots of wood here)no abortions (yet-hopefully never). I would be interested in finding out as well.

I talked with a couple local breeders recently and they also have white clover. They said they have never had problems that they are aware of.

However, the copious quantities of drool keep me on my toes - a spit bath I don't need! YUCK!!
