SOooo... we ultrasounded our broodie yesterday at day 14 and we saw the well sought after black spot on the screen :D First shot with frozen!! Way to go girl!!

Sambuca swimmers are excellent... now... I am stuck with two extra doses!!!!

I understand this is still quite early but this mare has an already successful history of catching on the first try and not slipping embryos.

BUT! I can't really sell two doses as a full breeding is three doses and it's getting late in the year and it would still be nice to have two babies instead next year so they can play together.

So, my question (as it is getting late in the year, and so on) : can I risk having another mare bred right away with one dose of semen or is it still too risky that my broodie will loose it?

I haven't had any problems with mares in foal yet so I am quite unknowledgeable about these issues! (Thank god should I say?) Our broodmare, that has already checked in foal, isn't going anywhere anytime soon. We are only taking her to an inspection in August (at... day... 69-70) and that's it. Otherwise, she is only enjoying pasture life.

Thanks :-)

This a question that can't really be answered by others for you... :-)

Mares do lose pregnancies. It's a fact. The highest rate of pregnancy loss is in the first 40 days. The highest percentage of those losses will occur in the first 15 days, so you are past that hurdle, but not out of the woods... ever!

If you wanted to gamble but play safe, you could wait until your mare's 40+ day pregnancy check indicates still pregnant and healthy and then breed a second mare. But pregnancy losses do still happen after then as well...

It's one of the risks associated with buying semen by the dose rather than with a live foal guarantee! :-)

Yeah! I bought a breeding and it's three doses... and we only used up one for our broodmare and it was enough for her!
