I bred my 3 year old maiden mare last heat cycle with TS. She came up open and at 22 days post OV has a 45 mm follicle, no edema and a very flacid uterus, cervix is open. We infused a half a liter of LRS and gave her a couple of oxytocins yesterday afternoon and evening. I bred her today with TS, her cervix feels great, nice and open and moist. What does her flacid uterine tone mean to her? Anything additional I can do?
The uterine tone should be flaccid during estrus. Progesterone - secreted from the CL during the luteal phase (roughly paralleling diestrus) is what "tones" the uterus. There is no progesterone present during estrus (or shouldn't be!).
There are so many potential reasons for failure of establishment of pregnancy that it is really impossible to list them all here. Starting by a good breeding soundness examination performed by a veterinarian experienced and good in equine reproduction (preferably a theriogenologist) would be the best place to start if you have not had one performed yet.
