A close friend of mine has a mare who is a lovely mare. This mare is well built and active in the show ring. She is 15 years old and has had one foal when she was 2. Unfortuantely she has had a very hard life up until my friend. She was starved not once but twice and seized by the county animal control. When animal control got to her she was a 1.5 body score. She was placed with my friend six years ago and has blosssomed. My friend would like to breed her to my stallion but is not sure if the mare can even concieve. Can severe starvation cause a mare to be sterile?
I have bred successfully rescued mares. There was 1 maiden mare we couldn't get to take, but the majority I have dealt with have had no problem. As long as they are up to where they should be now and healthy. Can't hurt to try. Especially since she has foaled previously.
