Has anyone had experience with mares whose foal heats extend to 20 plus days? We have a mare that we start checking at about eight days and she will appear to start having edema and a growing follicle at about 12 days and then will keep edema and follicle growing slowly until twenty plus.

I have had one mare that would not show a foal heat. She was a very protective mother and not interested in a stallion until the next cycle.

I'll ditto TX Breeder... same thing with a mare I have....the only good thing I've found is that her foals don't scour either...

I have a mare that settles on her foal heat, but if I don't breed her then, she won't come in until her foal is weaned. Actually, she probably comes in heat, but she doesn't show it until her foal is weaned. Very protective.

I never even tease foal heats, I use the 30 day heat.
