We have a welsh cross mare in to breed. She was ultrasounded, but the vet was unable to palpate her vaginaly. His hand would not fit (he does not have a big hand). He suggested going ahead and trying to breed her. She is an 18 year old maiden mare. We tried to breed her the first time and the stud did get in a ways but with her moving around so much I do not think that he actualy got her serviced. She bled allot. We waited 48 hours and tried again. This time he could only penetrate a small ways in. She was bleeding again and we quit. Is there mares that are just to tight to get in and if she were to get bred would she have difficulty delivering a foal. Also do you have any other suggestions on this mare? Thanks

Too bad I'm new at these forums... My advice could have help you then... I also experience something very similar with my 11 year old maiden mare. Her cervix was too tight. The repro specialists told my vet that having the mare pregnant could be very risky, especially during delivery. It was almost certain she would need a cesarian, and even more, I could have lose the mare and the foal... Deciding this would be too risky, I decided not to breed her. The specialist said this is very rare... Good luck!
