I currrently am artificially inseminating a 13 year old, barren mare at my clinic. She has poor vulvar conformation, low-slung old-mare uterus, and retains fluid badly. Last week, after daily ultrasounds, I shipped semen on a 3.5 cm follicle (her 6th or 7th day of estrus). When the semen arrived, her follicle had regressed to a 3.0, so I gave her 5000 units hCG, prayed hard, and inseminated as the semen was already there. SHe hadn't ovulated the next day follicle was a 3.2, used the second dose, and here we are. I couldn't get another shipment as it was the weekend, so that was all we could do.
I talked to a theriogenologist from the University of MO and he said I might try Fluphenazine. Has anyone had any experience with that? ANy explanations?
The mare was cultured and a cytology performed prior ro breeding, both of which were negative.
