We're thinking of keeping our colt as a stud (not gelding him). We've never owned a stallion before, (we have only mares), but thought if he turns out looking nice, we'd keep him as a stud. Question is, are stallions hard keepers? Thanks!
They can be easy or hard. There is no "standard". It is worth noting that keeping a stallion is not necessarily like keeping a mare or gelding. While many stallions are very easy to manage (note "many" not "all"), they are still stallions, and that means one must remain conscious of that fact at all times. It doesn't mean that you automatically have to handle them differently (depending upon the stallion and circumstances) but it does mean that you have to be ready at a split-seconds notice to handle them differently, as hormones can kick into overdrive at any time!!
If you are contemplating keeping a colt for breeding purposes, I would encourage you to go and spend some time with a couple of different breeding operations so you have an idea of what you may be getting involved in. It will perhaps give you a better persepctive to work from.
