I have just made the surprisingly tough decision to get my yearling colt castrated tomorrow. I read in one book that after castration the horse can be fertile for up to 6 weeks, but I didnt see this mentioned in any other books since. Is this true or common? My yearling is currently separated from mares and I was wondering how long after castration do I have to wait before he can go back into the same field as them? Obviously I dont want any accidental pregnancies. The mares wont kick him if he continues to try to mount them (they all mother him) but I would be more worried that such over exertion might cause intestinal prolapse. At what stage are we out of the danger zone for fertility and complications? Any input appreciated
I would wait at least two months but everyone may have a different opinion. I had a mare bred from a horse that had been gelded( he was a two year old)5 weeks prior to buying him. Vet just laughed at me! Yes if they are producing sperm at a year old then they can retain some for up to six weeks. That and make sure he gets pleanty of exercise to help reduce swelling and bleeding..
