Our yearling stallion got a bad case of strangles and he was hospitalized and ended up with purpura and had to be treated with steriods also. The vets said it would not affect his future fertility, but we have had many other "concerned" people telling us that he will be sterile. He is 2 now and we want to start breeding him next year. I wouldn't be too alarmed though.
