Is there any truth to the statement that a horse that gets stranlges will be sterile? Our yearling stallion got a bad case of strangles and he was hospitalized and ended up with purpura and had to be treated with steriods also. The vets said it would not affect his future fertility, but we have had many other "concerned" people telling us that he will be sterile. He is 2 now and we want to start breeding him next year. Thanks for your expertise!
High systemic temperatures (fever) associated with any systemic infection may result in sterility that can either be temporary, or more rarely permanent. I wouldn't be too alarmed though. If you still have major concerns, collection of semen and evaluation of the ejaculate will answer your question.
