My Stallion has caught some kind of creepy crud and spiked a fever of 103. It has droped and he's on SMZs but I was wondering what kind of fertility reprocussions to expect. he's got a plie of mares to breed. anybody delt wih this before? |

Fertility may be negatively affected for up to 60 days after the fever resolved. You should have his semen collected and evaluated. |

Yep was planning on that I was just trying to get a ball park of my odds. How many studs that are affected are affected for the full sixty days? The major reason I'm worried is we are working on an ET in an older problem mare and were all ready fighting an uphill battle. Ideally I'd like a foal from this mare and my stud, who normally has very good motility and conception rates, but if he's sixty days from full motility I probably need to go semen shopping.

Megan .. depending on what he has... trauma, illnesses or injuries can produce a lower sperm count about 60 days after.... had 1 that did that and I started him on Red cell supplement ASAP> sure enough - the count went down in 65 days to a third of his normal... but bounced back about 20-30 days later.
We were shipping semen at that time....his normal count was tremendous, so it wasn't a toatl loss....but we shipped carefully and had to reschedule our own mares to accomadate. |

It takes 57 days to "build" a sperm, so those sperm that were started to be "built" during the fever will be ready for ejaculation in 57 days, and if they were negatively affected by the fever, then they will be malformed or otherwise in trouble. Addition of supplements will not help that.
Sperm stored and already under production may also have been negatively affected, so any sperm ejaculated up to the time those "new" sperm are ejacultated may also be in trouble.
If his sperm (testicular temperatures) were not affected by the fever, there probably won't be a problem.
The only way you can know is by doing periodic semen analysis. You may get lucky, you may not. Conjecture won't tell you anything...  |

We’re going to give him two weeks off while he's on Meds then check, I'm just interested in conjecture because if I have to worry for two weeks with 2 weeks with out even blind speculation to keep me company I'll give myself an ulcer! |

Update: we collected Ty last night and he is just fine, normal semen quantity, but with a slightly higher percentage of circle swimmers. Inseminated our donor mare so we're crossing our fingers! |

So here is an interesting devlopement. The mare I breed right before the stud got a fever got one cover, and didn't tease out for five days after that cover. We checked her yesterday and she was building a follicle today the follicle had shrunk and volia we have an embryo! Now this is my question, does Tyroan have some really good swimmers or is my mare teasing in after she ovulates? |

Sperm may live in a healthy reproductive tract for up to six days.
Mares habitually tease "in" for 24-48 hours after ovulation.
Couple those two facts together and you probably have your answer... |
