I have the opportunity to purchase a 25 yo stallion, he is very much underweight and neglected, but he's a proven stud, and he bred at least one mare last year, and she was pregnant. is it ok to have him breed a little, I think one or two a week would be the maximum (natural service), before he is restored to a better health ? obviously, we don't want to wait much, because of the time of year and his age (who knows if he will still be around next year ?)
those of you with older stallions, what is your experience ? is there something I need to look for ? I don't plan to have him collected, because he has never been before, and I have him very cheap, just plan to breed 2 mares and ultrasound 15 days after ovulation, but is it dangerous for him ?
he doesn't look very good (only seen pictures of him, but I know his offspring), but that is quite normal at the end of winter at this age, I think, the grass is only coming in now, hope he will get better in pasture.
I would have his teeth looked at; a good float might help him put more weight on. Older studs can have libido problems especially if they have something that's sore, so you need to be sure he's feeling up to it. If he doesn't feel well enough he won't perform for you. Most studs respond very well to collection if it’s done right, and you use a jump mare in heat, so if your mares are cycling at the same time you could collect him and split the ejaculate and that way it won't be as much work for him. A little management could go a long way in his case.
I have a 20 year old stallion. He seems to be having trouble breeding this year. Should I be graining him? He looks great, has lots of libido & energy, but the ejactulate isn't pouring out of the mares when he is done, like it did the last 2 years. Without getting a semen check, what other options do I have?
My stallion is 24 this year. He has no back teeth and I have to feed him his pelleted feed with beet pulp wetted so he eats soup for his meals. :D He is looking a lot better now that we had his teeth done two years ago. (3 abcessed teeth were pulled). He does have a little soreness after mounting the mares because of a little arthristis in his hocks. I give him 1 gram of bute if he seems a little off but for the most part he acts like a 2-year old. http://www.horsesnsuch.com
