Jos, I breed my mares a.i. via shipped, cooled semen. One of the stallions I am breeding to is young and from the get-go he has had urine crystals in the semen. The owners have tried many things to correct this but still the crystals are in the semen. I've just ordered semen again as the mare has not yet settled. Upon arrival, my vet checks motility and morphology. Even though the crystals are present, the motility has been in the 20-30% range. Am I wasting my money trying to get my mare settled as long as there is urine in the semen? Thanks for any information you can give me.
The chances of estabishing a pregnancy with urine in the semen would be extremely low.
The cause of urospermia is unknown, and there is no "cure", save collecting the stallion only after he has urinated - and even that will not be 100% successful.
