I have a stallion whom I have owned for 16 years,in the last year he has become overly aggressive to his mares as well as my other horses. He went through an illness which was unexplained according to my vet,he had bronchitus and a severe infection in his lungs, which is unusual for an Arab and seems ever since then he has become almost unbareable to deal with. Before I took him to the vet he tried to kick me,paw into a fence and reak havock on the broodmares and foals which he has never done.He has always been used for breeding, but now I cannot pasture breed only hand breed him because of his aggressive nature,he also paces the fences like a mad man but never seems to drop weight,he will charge the fence if I walk a yearling by him, being his own foal,I used to wean his foals with him.I really do not understand his aggression,he has never been beaten or abused or treated badly,he has always been well taken care of and treated like one of the family.Anyone else ever have this problem, what can you do? |

Gelding him had crossed my mind, but since I havent a replacement for him I was sticking it out till I got one,he is a fine sire, has some really nice qualities to pass along and I have raised 25 foals from him.I have owned him since he was 11 months old done all his training.According to the vet that treated him for his illness last year his personality could change as a result of being sick, although I am not sure how having bronchitus makes ones mind different but I took his word for it,and then I saw first hand he has really changed from that sweet fellow that my young son could ride bareback with no bridle into a persnickety old man.I myself am not a professional trainer but have delt with my share of damaged horses, but I have no clue as to what I can do for my guy, except that I have moved him closer to the mares(but separate) and he seems to be ok as long as I dont walk one of the yearlings past his stall. Thanks I need all the luck I can get. |

Shannon, Where are you located? This may sound bizarre but have you looked at contacting an Equine Communicator? |
