Need help with choosing extenders to test my stallions.
Kenney, Revolution, EZ Mixin and Next Generation
are basically the same (nonfat milk/sugar), right?

Then there are the antibiotics:
*Amikacin
*Amikacin & Pen-K
*Ticarcillin
Gentamicin - could reduce sperm motility in the equine so I guess I can skip this one.

And what about the new E-Z MixinŽ10 Advanced Semen Extender Formulas and all the antibiotic combinations. They say it is like no other extender but I haven't found any information that makes it different other than the antibiotic is in a pull apart capsule.

*INRA 96 Extender - skim milk-based?

*VMD-Z - egg yolk-based with amikacin and penicillin G potassium. Can this extender be put in the freeze after it has been opened?

I was planning on buying the ones with the * by them to test my stallions, any others I should add or scratch from my list? What about E-Z MixinŽ10 Advanced?

Nope. While E-Z Mixin' is actually Kenney (and therefore the same), Next Generation is a Kenney-based Dual-Sugar extender (so different formula) and I think Revolution may also be dual-sugar. Consequently, I would include one of the Kenneys and one of the dual-sugars.

Different stallions respond differently to different antibiotics (including Gentamycin), so one has to try various combinations. One cannot rule out any antibiotic without trying it.

Haven't actually tried it, so can't comment. We tend not to use ARS products, as we find they tend to be high-priced, plus we haven't had the best experiences with customer support.

INRA '96, while skim-milk based is far more complex than that. It's actually the "good" ingredients from the skim milk, plus some other stuff, so one cannot actually classify it as a skim milk extender such as Kenney.

Yes, as can all other extenders.

Probably start with those and see what results you get, then test with more if you need to - and be critical. You would be astounded how low progressive motility actually is compared to what most people think it is, when it's read using CASA!! :-)

The antibiotic Timentin (Next Gen.) and Ticarcillin (Revolution) are they basically the same? Do I need to test both?

Timentin contains a β-Lactimase inhibitor, Clavulanate potassium, so no, they are not the same as Timentin offers more coverage than Ticarcillin alone.

it all sounds so complicated... I have thought about taking the classes and do it myself when my colt is old enough but not sure now--may just pay someone else to collect and ship

Well... we do try to make it a little easier by offering a cooled semen evaluation service where you collect and ship to us in the different extenders we send you (following the directions we also send) and then we do all the evaluations and send back the information to you.

That, or you can always just stand your stallion at our facility for the breeding season! :-)

I finally found out the difference between the standard Ez Mixin and EZ Mixin 10, got this response from Animal Reproduction System.

"The difference between the EZ Mixin formula's is that EZ Mixin 10 has different ingredients than our standard Ez Mixin .

"The standard Ez Mixin has Glucose and Non-fat Dry Milk Solids."

"The EZ Mixin 10 has Non-fat Dry Milk Solids, Glucose, Sodium Chloride, Hepes, Sodium Bicarbonate, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Chloride and Sodium Phosphate."

I guess it is suppose to be better?

More to test, ugh?
-E-Z Mixin10 "BF"
-E-Z Mixin10 "CST"
-E-Z Mixin10 "BF+" with Potassium Penicillin G
-E-Z Mixin10 "CST+" with Potassium Penicillin G
-E-Z Mixin10"BFT" with Ticarcillin

Apparently is it a HEPES-buffered saline NFDMS extender.

My guess is that it may be better - with some stallions! It is generally accepted that there is no one extender that is going to work adequately for all stallions, but it is probably one worth including in the evaluation.
