I have never bred to a stallion located in Canada. If I find a stallion I like that is located there, is it better to do chilled or frozen semen? Or is chilled even a good idea, hence the distance? (I am located in southeast US). Just curious what all would be involved in the process... if it's too involved, I'd just have to settle for a stallion a little "closer to home." Thanks!

sorry, probably should've put this under the Transported Semen category...

There's not really much difference between shipping semen from Canada to the USA and shipping semen within the USA. One does have to include Customs Paperwork, but there are not any health requirements, so it's usually pretty straightforward. There's a lot of cooled semen that crosses the border going south as well as frozen semen, so either is a fair bet. The usual caveats apply though - you need to have someone that knows what they are doing to get a good shipment out.

Thanks, Jos. I was just curious since all the topics on this board seemed to cover semen going from US to Canada, not other way around. I found a Cleveland Bay stallion up there I really like, but wasn't sure about the shipping.

Also, I know this is a bit off-topic (please don't shoot me!), but I've also been admiring your RID stallion. I know he's getting on up there in years, but what do you think the possibility is of him standing at stud next year?

There was an outbreak of CEM in the US, which is why there are health restrictions with (and discussions about) semen from the USA to Canada. AS there are no such issues in Canada, there are no health restriction (or discussion) going the other way.

"Touch of the Blues" is not actually owned by us, he is standing with (i.e. being managed by) us for the season, as he did last year. He is owned by Doug and Simone MacKay of Manu Forti Farm. I cannot therefore comment as to whether he will be available for public use again next year with absolute reliability, but I suspect he will be as long as the old man is still around. He's a sweet guy and one of my favourites! :-)

Thanks again for everything! Will definitely have to get in touch with the owners. I know it's a bit early to start worrying about breeding next year, but to me, it never hurts to ask. The worst someone can ever say is No!
