Last Monday I noticed that our 21yr old stallion had alot of swelling in his scrotum, prepuce, right hind leg and edema in his belly. My vet does not seem overly concerned and told me to watch him and administer 2bute 2x day. This is not helping at all. The stallion is otherwise completely healthy and acting normal. I did call a 2nd vets office for another opinion but of course they did not return my call. Does anyone have any experience with scrotum swelling or ideas on how to reduce it. He is about the size of a basketball at the moment. He has not been bred yet this year and is not turned out with other horses, so at this point we do not know what caused the swelling to occur. Thanks! |

I would definatly get him to be seen by a vet. This could be something serious that could require a workup and antibiotics. |

Cathy the first vet did see him and wasnt too worried he is coming back out tomorrow but I am upset that this has been happening for a week and noone really seems to think it is a big deal. I did turn the stallion out in a small round pen today for the 1st time since the injury and the edema has come down a little. Thanks for commenting! I will keep you posted |

G I had a stallion who's sheath swelled to about the size of a tennis ball, I got the vet immediatley and she said she had never seen anything like it before. She thought he may have scratched it on something and got a splinter or a forgien object in there. She put him on a course of penacillian and told me to work him for around 20 mins twice a day. Within 4 days it had gone down. Maybe worth some consideration? |

I had a gal on another site that had this happen to her stallion. Seems he OVER extended it! I guess its like a sprain and needs to have it reduced by exercise, cold water wash downs and Bute to help reduce the swelling. He came out of it okay in a week or so. I would imagine that the DMSO would help too! |

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and also for making me feel better that he would recover. He did! Just took some time, with turnout, antibiotics and patience on my end he is back to normal and reading to head to the breeding shed next week |
