Hi,
I have a young stallion, that i have taught to hand serve the mares, and he does so very nicely, and politely and has mastered what goes where... and who is boss.
He hadnt settled any of the mares after 3 heat seasons & breedings, so i sent them to outside stallions. I left one mare unbred, and have had them running together and him paddock serving her during her heats. He is very polite with her, and accurate with his breeding, but she still isnt settling. I am not concerned, as this colt is only 2yo, and i am happy for this mare to stay empty for the year.
My question is, would you let this "immature" stallion keep running and serving this mare. His libido is GREAT! Both are kept very clean during the mares heat (whilst they are breeding). I would love her to fall pregnant to him, but if she doesnt i am happy to wait too.
Do you think this could be doing any harm to either mare or stallion in this situation??

Have you done a count on him to see if he is producing viable semen....he may know what to do with the right parts and have proper trg.... but not getting mares pregnant ... think you should run a count and motility on him and see is the problem starts with him.

No i havent, i had my vet do a dismount sample on him a few months ago. And he said that there was about 4 sperm in that. I know this is not the semen fraction of the sperm, and the fact that there was sperm in this section at all is probably a good thing, but my vet advised me not to worry about doing a count on him just yet, as he probably needs more maturity anyway. Just to breed him every now and then, and see how he goes for this season, then do a count on him next year.
I am not too concerned that he isnt settling mares, i was more concerned that this breeding would hurt any of his "plumbing" if he isnt mature enough to settle.
