We just put a 3yr old stud out to pasture with 5 mares. He has herded all but the two 2yr old mares, he is very aggressive towards these two and will not let them near the hay or water. What is the reason for this? I am pretty new to this and am just curious as too why he is so aggresive with the younger mares. |

He's just young and trying to show them that he's boss. He will let up after a week and everybody should be back to normal in a little while. |

ok-thanks for your input on that! He is SOOO aggressive! I have never seen anything like that! I just hope in the cold weather that he will let them eat-the head mare doesnt do anything but stand around and watch. It was a crazy scene! |

We had a gelding that was overly possesive like this - hay in the pasture was a particular nightmare! Have you got a large enough field that you can spread piles around so that he cant possibly gaurd them all, all of the time - Eventually he will get tired of chasing around and atleast you know they are all getting their grub.Also we found that if we introduced new horses to the herd we did it one at a time with him in a nutral pasture where he didnt think 'this is my field!' Eventually he will settle down Im sure. |

The most disturbing thing is that he keeps them away from water. Can you set another trough far away from the first, so that they can drink? |

we ended up having to remove this stud-he injured my mare pretty bad and she had not eaten or drank in over 36 hours so we figured the best answer was to remove him. The person I am doing this with figured the other pasture was the better alternative. Things are back to normal now except for my injured mare. Riding mare none the less. But she will be ok. Thanks for all the input on this situation! |

oh we decided that since he had caused a pretty nasty injury he didnt deserve to be with the mares. My mare got the raw end of the fence and had to be stitched on her shoulder. It ended up being a total nightmare. The studs owner decided that he can see his girls when breeding comes around again. |
