I recently put my four year old stallion next to my yearling stud colt. They are in stalls with pipe runs on them. They get along fine just seem to play hard all day, nipping and teasing, licking each other, non-stop. I was wondering if this is bad and if this is teaching my young colt bad manners or if I should just not worry about it and let them play? They both seem more aggressive to me when I handle them after being next to each other.

Hi,

I have a 3 year old stud and a yearling stud. I got both a year ago, shortly after the younger one was weaned. They are best buddies. They've always been penned next to each other or together, but they've grown up together, so although they play a lot I know I can trust them together. They do get a little rambunctious, but no one has ever gotten hurt and they seem to enjoy each others company. They are both very well mannered around people, but I've taught them to be that way. A stud will try to test you no matter what, so you have to be on your toes. Even if they are the sweetest boys, they will still try to play with you, too, so you just have to teach them they can't play with you like they do each other. Owning a stallion is a very serious undertaking, so make sure that you are always prepared for anything they might dish out at any time. Let them have their fun, but let them know you demand their respect when you're handling them--firmly and gently let them know who's the boss.
My boys love to toss a horse ball back and forth over the fence that seperates them. I swear, boys and their football :-)
Good luck!

I know a girl who has a few stallions that are all turned out together in a herd with geldings. She doesn't have any problems with this arrangement as long as the mares are out of sight.

From my experience studs can play very hard, so if they are competitive or something like that I would not allow them to touch on another.
i have three stallions living side by side and I have had no problems except when a mare passed by. The three of them would become Larry, Mo, and Curly of the better part of an hour before calming down.
Just my 2 cents.
