Hi, I have a question. I have a TB cross colt that will "officially" be a year old later this month. So far, he has only dropped 1 testicle, so have been unable to geld him yet. He's been out in a pasutre with another gelding and mare (not his mother), and this weekend I will finish building a separate enclosure for him where he can stay until he decides to spit his other "little boy" out.

I have not seen him try to mount the mare, but he does lick and nuzzle all over her and smell her teats, but without raising his upper lip or dropping his penis. However, she is an old broodmare that has been around the block and knows her job. My question is, if for some reason he has covered her without my knowledge, how would that affect his attitude? He has his typical colt moments where he wants to be the boss, but for the most part he's still an easy going guy. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Stallions are individuals, so there is really no single answer to your question.

It is however quite likely that he has covered her even if you didn't see it, and both testicles present or not, he can still get her pregnant, which seeing as he is a cross himself seems unfortunate...

Thanks! I just moved into a new place, and my previous residence there was absolutely no way I could separate him from the mare, short of leaving him locked in a stall 24/7. Hopefully, I won't have an "oops" baby. The mare is 22 years old, and I haven't seen any signs of her coming into heat yet,so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he hasn't covered her. Thanks again!

My old broodmare came into heat over the weekend, so got my colt separated in time.
