I am breeding my mare to a stallion that has not been bred for a few years. The breeding will be live cover in hand. Should his penis be cleaned before breeding? If so, what washing agent should be used and how far in advance of cover? Should there be more than one cleaning? Should he ejaculate before beginning to cover mares again? My mare has had difficulty in the past with post- breeding clearing, so I want to give her the best chance. She will have oxytocin post breeding. Thank you.
Stallions should always be washed prior to every breeding or semen collection, using just warm water. It's not just a "once a year" thing - but should be done every time. Ideally, in a situation like this, one would also collect or breed the stallion prior to breeding the mare. Collection would be best, as that will give the opportunity for evaluation of the ejaculate as well.
AI would also be advantageous to your mare, allowing a smaller volume of ejaculate to be used, and a method that is cleaner than live cover (thereby introducing fewer contaminants to her uterus). Of course, if it's a TB breeding, you don't have that option...
