I know of a stallion that has been used for pasture breeding. At some point, he bred a mare and got the tip of his penis tangled in her tail hair, and lost the tip of his penis.
Once he was healed last year, he bred mares, but they did not conceive.
I had no idea that this could happen. Are injuries like this common? And does anyone have any idea why he might either not cover completely, or be sterile after such an injury???

Pasture breeding injuries are not uncommon. Kicks and tail hair cuts being the most common.
If there was nerve damage (likely) then it maybe that he is not receiving adequate stimulation to achieve ejaculation. There is also the possibility that psychologically he is damaged and he is not breeding mares any more, or is unable to ejaculate because it hurts to ejaculate, and he knows it's going to.

Thank-you. That does make sense. He did breed a mare, but don't know if he ejaculated. He flagged his tail afterward. I guess this breeding season will confirm if he is able to be a stud anymore.
