I have a colt that will be coming up 12mths,I want to geld him sooner than later. He was no visible "jewels".His sire was late to drop {16mths} so figure he is going to be like him.The thing with his sire is his would appear some days one or the other & could usually find them when he was lying down. Not so much with this colt.I have just on rare occasion been able to palpate one or other when he was down & I do know he had both down when born but they sucked up/disappeared after a week or 2. So my question,I've heard that if they were born with 2 they will come back down &are not a crypt? is that so & is there anyway the vet can still have them come down enough to geld or do I have to play the waiting game & hope it is not another year or 2 before they appear? Also I do have him seperated from the mares but this week I noticed his first signs of getting
" BIGBOY" brains thinking girls on the other side of fence were hot stuff!! With him being retained at this point how fertile would he be??

Once the inguinal ring is closed (typically within the first week after foaling at the latest), if the testicles are on the external side, that's where they will stay. They may end up being held in the inguinal canal, but they do not go up and down, except in a limited way relative to ambient temperature.

There are more details about this topic in the article on cryptorchidism which might help.

I just had my colt gelded last Friday. He is just 12 months the 25th of this month. I could only find 1 testicle down on different occasions. My vet said he wouldn’t be able to tell for sure if both were down until he was laid down. After sedating him and laying him down he found both, but said he still had 1 sucked way up even after sedating.
