I have a three and half yr old stud. When I went to breed him all he did was chomp at the mare like a baby does when showing submission to other horses. Is it possible he could be to young still.

Although physically he's not too young, it does sound as if mentally he is.

How was he raised? With a group of other horses or in a stall by himself?

Is the mare that your teasing a dominant mare in the heard (perhaps she's kicked his butt in the past)?

Is she in standing heat?

Did you use him to tease her? As LRidgeway suggests, he may be unsure of how to proceed.

He may need some time with a safe fence between them for him to socialize and feel confident about approaching her. After she accepts his attention without rejection, he should become more aggressive and confident about approaching and doing what comes naturally.

His experience with first time breeding may effect his responses during breeding from then on. Take the time for him to feel and be safe from injury by the mare. Prepare the mare by securing her from kicking him. Present her only when she is in a standing heat and responding to a stallion in a submissive behavior.

I have a 7yr old TB stallion that raced from 2-6 and when we first tried to breed him in Feb when the breeding season started he would "chomp" at the mare like you described or walk over to her and then try to eat anything that maybe on the ground but was totally uninterested in the mare herself. He wouldnt even tease her. The vet suggested putting the 2 of them out in the roundpen whenever she was inheat. It took 4 months of "work" on the mares part but he finally got the idea mid June and we are now expecting a late May foal....once he got started he was less than pleased when we closed the breeding season on him mid July. As long as she is not being over agressive (kicking) him I would feel safe putting them in a confined area as my vet suggested. It worked for us...but time is also necessary.
