How exactly is it done? I read with interest the posts on "Dirty Stallions - In hand vs. Pasture" so understand that the sheath should be cleaned only with warm water but how does one retract the penis to clean it?

With my geldings I get 2 pairs of latex glove and either mineral oil or ky jelly and make sure you either have someone hold them or tie them to a sturdy fence and put the gloves on with some oil or jelly and slowly and gently put your fingers in the sheath and put a thin to moderate cover of oil or jelly and let it sit for awhile and then take a clean pair of gloves and remove the crustys..be VERY CAREFUL }}as they may kick if they are not use to this procedure

Thanks for the info. I cleaned him shortly after I posted this, and it was a synch, he is now 'trained' to be cleaned:-) I don't use any type of vaseline, ky jelly or mineral oil because of the residue attracting dirt. Instead I used a tiny amount of baby bath creme which isn't a soap and therefore isn't a problem if you can't wash it all out.
