I was told that a shot of Selenium at the start of the breeding season will increase a stallion's libido / sperm levels.

Is this correct, and are there any side-effects?

Unless there is a deficiency present, there is no reason why it should make any difference. Selenium toxicity however can result in the horse's hair falling out and his hooves sloughing off.

Interesting, thanks. This is advice given by an equine breeding specialist so I'm a bit alarmed.

Just out of interest, does a Selenium deficiency present in lowered libido / sperm levels?

Selenium deficiency primarily presents with rhabdomyolysis and possibly reduced immune function, which may lead to opportunistic infections.

Deficiency as well as toxicity have been shown to cause subfertility and infertility in a wide selection of mammals. If you suspect a selenium deficiency, then a simple blood test should be able to give you an answer.
