I recently bought a stallion I have known all my life. When I last saw him two years ago, he had orange sized testes.
Today I noticed they were much much smaller. about the size of eggs.
He has been with me now four days, and the weather gets chilly at night.
He has not been bred since he was two, gets sweet feed and just plain hay, no alfalfa. He does not recieve any meds, joint supplements etc.
What could cause this? Is there any way to increase their size?
I also have another question, I plan on getting his semen tested by my vet of course. My stud has never been exposed to any sort of artificial collection. How would the vet obtain a sample?
Thanks in advance!

I dont beleive size of the teste really has anything to do with fertility its odd that they would change tho

Testicular volume is positively correlated to daily sperm output. The bigger the testicles, the more sperm are produced. Additionally, there is a correlation to testosterone production, which will similarly correlate to libido. Hence, at a certain point, testicular size is very definitely correlated to fertility.
You indicate you have known this stallion "all your life", which leads me to believe that he is not a young stallion (no insult intended as to your age! ), and one item which would correlate to this situation if he is an older stallion would be testicular degeneration. There are a variety of causes for this, including heredity, injury and sickness. The testicles just get smaller and smaller, and eventually the stallion becomes infertile. It is typically not reversible once the condition has commenced.
If your vet is competent and knowledgeable in the field of stallion management, and the stallion still has reasonable libido, collection of semen for evaluation should not be an issue.

Thank you very much for your reply!
I should have specified that he is 12, and I have known him all HIS life!! Ha ha. No insult taken Jos!!
I have an appt with my vet to get him tested. He is still very "studdy", so the will is there LOL
I have every confidence in my vet, which is nice.
Just another quick question though, what would the "average" (and I know it varies a lot) testicular size for a stallion his age? He is a QH, halter bred, 15.2hh and about 1200 lbs.
Also, we were told by another breeder, that he won't catch mares because he does not masterbate, and "refresh" his sperm. Any truth to that?
Thanks a million everyone, and I'll post what the vet says. could be a learning experience!!

As you note, "average" is relative... for that type of horse I would say that a medium sized orange would be "average"... certainly not eggs...
Most stallions masturbate, but few masturbate to the point of ejaculation, so the fact that he doesn't masturbate (or at least, he's not been seen masturbating) in itself means nothing. [Healthy fertile] Stallions produce billions of sperm on a daily basis, but they daily shed billions of "old" sperm in their urine, not by masturbation, so your breeder associate is absolutely misinformed...
