I have noticed that my 8 yr old stallions right testicle sometimes goes all the way up into his body cavity. He is not a cryporchid aS it is down most of the time but I don't think he should be able to suck it all the way up? Is there a name for this and what could the consequences be?

It can't go up into the body cavity, unless there's something dramatically wrong with his conformation! :-)

In cold weather, stressful situations, or when working, stallions will withdraw their testicles up toward the abdomen, all of which is normal. It might be that he is withdrawing into the opening of the inguinal canal, but he probably isn't getting it any further!

Thank you Jos. Perhaps I should explain further...I know how they draw them up tight but this one totally disappears, the sack is empty and shriveled looking. If I palpate I can feel it and actually when I do that it usually pops back down. So if he is drawing it up into the inguinal canal is that ok or is there a problem there? Thank you.

It is likely that it is - as previously mentioned - entering the lower portion of the inguinal canal. If the is the case, it is unlikely to be an issue. If there is an ability to withdraw beyond the inguinal ring, then there could be a risk of an inguinal hernia, so perhaps to be on the safe side have your vet look at it the next time they're out to make absolutely sure what is going on.

Would this have much if any effect on the stallions' fertility?

Pulling the testicles closer to the body or further away is part of nature's testicular thermoregulatory system that is essential for good sperm output, so under normal circumstances it not only is not detrimental, it's desirable.

Having said that, there is evidence that under non-natural prolonged retention circumstances, there can be a reduction in sperm motility and quality. The aspect looked at in the research was the prolonged retention as a result of the stallion being worked (shown).
