This is the third year for breeding our pony stallion, Lil Champagne Tease. He's easy as pie to work with and with the growing number of requests for shipped semen, I've been considering it. I would certainly prefer to have a vet that could train him and collect/ship semen but since there isn't a vet within a reasonable distance here that does collection, I am considering learning to collect him myself.

I have no doubt he would take to it like a duck on water. He pasture breeds, breeds on halter and I've even bred him to a taller mare without a halter on him by calling him up on a dirt pile where I had the mare backed into a low spot. We also use him to tease the mares here to breed to our mammoth jack and this little guy (10.2 hands) loves his job.

What equipment would I need for home collection? Please include anything needed for storage and shipping.
I don't see many miniature horses taht ship semen so is there even smaller sized equipment for ponies?
Other than a good breeding exam and cleaning, what else do I need to be considering?
I'm sure I'm leaving out some questions that need to be asked. I'm sure I can learn how, but I'm trying to determine if this is something I want to do too.

I would also be very interested in an answer. I'm not doing AI with my stallion at this point but I'm sure I will be in the future and will also need to know how to start the process and how to train the stallion.

Please take the time to review the articles section of this web site, where there are several articles that address your question specifically.
