Interestingly, Dr. Sue McDonnell found that using anti-masturbatory devices such as this resulted in the stallion masturbating more frequently! :-)

It is perfectly normal for a stallion to masturbate every 90 minutes on average, but very rarely to the point of ejaculation. Those that ejaculate are usually not in regular breeding use, while those that are in regular breeding use tend not to ejaculate. The concern (and why people use these torture devices) is the possibility of depletion of gonadal sperm reserves, but if the stallion is not breeding regularly... who cares? And if he is breeding regularly - he's not apt to ejaculate, so again, who cares???

The bottom line is that these archaic torture devices are contra-indicated by anyone who really knows about stallion behaviour.

More than anything else, your stallion would look like a complete idiot wearing that thing!

yes he would look funky. I believe in hard work and proper training not cruel devices to control a horse. I had to research it to find out what it was.

The ones illustrated were actually comparatively benign compared to some... They are also made with 1 inch nails sticking out instead of brush bristles. The nails are sharp - I was demonstrating one while lecturing and dropped it on my arm, and a few moments later had blood dripping off my fingers! And don't think that these are no longer available - I bought that particular one in a tack shop in Tennessee just 2 years ago, and it was not the only model available... :-(

No - it originated for use in the stall to discourage stallions from masturbating.

They are still used quite regularly on TWH and Saddlebred show stallions as an addition to their tail sets. A lot of tail sets have an area for these to snap right onto.

Horses that wear these devices are usually accompanied by seeing-eye-dogs.
