There is a stallion at my barn who we are trying to breed to a mare that is also at the barn. He has never bred before and the mare is an EXTREAMLY shy mare that has the quietest heat cycles I have ever seen. So you can see where the trouble can come in. When the mare comes into cycle we have to have the vet come out and either arm her or ultrasound her to be sure she is truly in cycle. She NEVER wink, squirts, or teases. Anyway we went to breed them today because the vet said she has a large breed able follicle and she was ready to go. When we took the stud to her it takes him a while of teasing with her for him to become erect. Then finally when he is ready enough to mount he will jump on her but stand pretty far from her butt. We have tried to push him closer, pull him closer, left him try without assistance to bring himself the foot or two further to truly connect with the mare. The few times he has gotten close enough for us to “help him” in the mare, he looses his erection. Once he has an erection he can only hold it for a few seconds. Which has us very stumped. I have seen him “bloom” very large when playing with himself, but he won’t even get close to that size when breeding. We are not sure if this is because the mare doesn’t wink or squirt when being teased to breed. Or if it is because he is not a seasoned stallion. Also when he was young he was diagnosed with a sacrum injury due to the abusive training he received before he was purchased. We also are wondering if he looses his erection and wont walk forward toward the mare when mounted because his sacrum is in pain?? There are a variety of possibilities ranging from environmental to physical to mental issues. You would probably be well advised to be assisted by and have his behaviour evaluated by someone that is experienced in stallion handling and who is a good stallion handler (simply having a stallion - even for years - does not necessarily mean they are a good stallion handler).
It could be pain. I have a mare that when my stallion mounts her she stiffen ups the bone in her tail and it keeps him from getting too close. He has backed off of her twice. We now have to tie a little string on her tail and pull it to the side prior to mounting or he doesn't get close enough. how is the mare reacting? Can you safely assist.. Does your stallion let you clean him fine when he is errected? Doesn he soften them sometimes it could be sensitivity. Have you ever collected him artificially? What is his response to that?
