I have a friend who has a gorgeous stallion that she has offered for me to use on my mares, only he is cow hocked. Does anyone know if this is hereditory or not??

This is a conformation fault and can be passed on. Arabians tend to have this problem a lot. Is he severely cow hocked or just a little? You would need to decide if this was something you wanted to chance or not.

If it's only a little bit and your mares are not cow hocked at all I'd take the chance, but if he's very cow hocked he really shouldn't be a stallion. A little cow hocked isn't a big deal unless you are planning on doing conformation classes, but there's no need to use a stallion with a glaring conformation problem when there's so many nice ones available. Don't fall into the trap of producing inferior horses because it's cheap and convenient.

Some horses are naturally cow-hocked depending on their breeding type. Your halter type horses generally will not be, (because they are bred to just stand there and look pretty, not to work) but some of your performance bred horses are, and it is just due to the type of work they are bred for. Sometimes it is not a conformational fault. Unless of course you are talking about severe cases. Slightly turned in hocks would not be uncommon at all in a performance bred horse.

Thanks all! You've all been a big help. In answer to your questions, when he was first bought (in very bad condition, extremely underweight) he was very cow hocked, but now that he has put on some codition, and is looking alot healthier and loved, he is not so dramatically cow hocked. His foaled will be entered in confirmation classes, as they are mini's. None of my mares are cow hocked, and they have all foaled lovely correct foals this season. I just dont know what to do!! I have a lovely stallion of my own, but the mare i want to put to this cow hocked stallion, would just make an awsome foal with him, less the cow hocks of course!!
